Report Finds that Physician Burnout Is a Public Health Crisis
At the end of January, Medscape published its annual national report on physician burnout, depression, and suicide. It found that, of the more than 15,000 physicians surveyed, 59% reported being burned out, colloquially depressed, or clinically depressed.

The same week, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health together with the Harvard Global Health Institute, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association published a paper titled "A Crisis in Health Care: A Call to Action on Physician Burnout." It states that "physician burnout is a public health crisis that urgently demands action by health care institutions, governing bodies, and regulatory authorities. If left unaddressed, the worsening crisis threatens to undermine the very provision of care, as well as eroding the mental health of physicians across the country."

Both publications emphasize that physician burnout is systemic, a finding that was reinforced by other publications ( 1, 2, 3, 4) who shared the reports.
