The City of Santa Barbara is in its eighth year of persistent drought. While the City has a diverse water portfolio that includes surface water from Lake Cachuma and Gibraltar Reservoir, state water that is conveyed through Lake Cachuma, ground water, and the Charles E. Meyer Desalination plant; conservation remains critical. The Community has done a tremendous job conserving water by 30% with many taking advantage of great City programs such as free water checkups, rebates, gardening classes, instructional videos, and more.

These classes provide a great overview of the concepts, design, and best practices for rainwater harvesting, graywater, and water wise landscaping.

Rainwater Harvesting 101: Mon.  Nov. 19th
Graywater 101: Thurs.  Dec. 6th
Water Wise Landscape Maintenance 101:  Wed. Dec.12th

Classes are taught by Sweetwater Collaborative and sponsored in part by the City. All classes are from 6:30-8:00 pm at the MacKenzie Park Community Building, 3200 State St.
Control Your Controller, Turn It Down this Fall

Feel that chill in the air? So do your plants. Reduce your outdoor watering for the fall, when landscapes don't need as much water due to rain, cooler temperatures, shorter days, and plant dormancy. You can simply take a day off your controller schedule, or plug in the Weekly Watering % Adjust on our website.

The City's water distribution system is comprised of approximately 307 miles of water mains. In an effort  to reduce water main breaks and conserve water the City is replacing old water pipes, valves, and hydrants. For information on where work is being performed, refer to the City's Major Projects Map

Pouring fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down the drain or garbage disposal creates obstructions in underground pipes and creates serious problems like blockage and sewer overflows. When washed down the sink, FOG can stick to the inside of sewer pipes (both on your property and under the streets). This holiday season, dispose of fats, oils, and grease properly using the tips on our website
