Community celebrates Mills Middle School 60-year anniversary
Established in 1958, Mills Middle School , just turned 60 years old on Oct. 25 and we celebrated this landmark event with great fanfare.

Mayor Linda Budge presented the school with a city proclamation, and beloved teacher and Rancho Cordova resident Terry Douglas emceed the evening. Current students, families and alumni came together to celebrate and take a fun tour of the campus, enjoying the many rich and state-of-the-art learning opportunities for students.

Much has happened since 1958, when five teachers and 190 students opened the school, known back then as Mills Junior High. Since that time, approximately 75,000 students have passed through the halls and classes at Mills, including local residents, business leaders, members of the military and current FCUSD staff. In 1986 Mills was recognized as a California Distinguished School and in 1993 it became a middle school offering grades 6-8.

There have been 11 principals since its inception, including current Principal Dana Carrigan. You will see Carrigan pictured here with Mayor Budge on her left, Superintendent Dr. Koligian on her right and Rancho Cordova City Manager Cyrus Abhar to her far right. A very special guest was present on the far left of this picture.Carrigan's father Ron Lingren, who was a counselor at Mills Jr. High School in the 1960's.

Mills has been more than a place to go to school all these years: It's been a place to make lifelong connections and build strong community. Happy 60th Birthday Mills!

Folsom Middle student council donates school supplies to White Rock Elementary
Folsom Middle School found themselves with a surplus of school supplies after winning a contest, so the student council decided to give the supplies to another school, White Rock Elementary.

Folsom Middle won $1,000 worth of school supplies in October from Schools Financial Credit Union's Tools for Schools contest after the PTO entered the contest. The supplies were turned over to the student council to decide what do do with them, and they thought it would be great to help another school out that could use the supplies. They chose White Rock Elementary in Rancho Cordova.

Student Council President Cayden Pitzer and Student Council Treasurer Zoe Carpenter visited White Rock Elementary with their Principal Larry Mahoney on Oct. 24 to deliver the school supplies to the school and meet with representatives from White Rock's student council.

White Rock Principal Canen Peterson and his students were so grateful for the donation. What a great way to give back and be an example to younger students of paying it forward!
Annual College Fair brings hundreds of college reps and students together
High school students and their families looking for college information didn't have to travel far to learn about their options. They just needed to come to the annual FCUSD College Fair , held at Folsom High School last month.

Representatives from over 100 institutions, including universities, colleges and branches of military, were present to provide handouts and answer questions on admissions, tuition, scholarships and programs. We counted over 1000 participants who visited booths and attended breakout workshops, where a variety of topics such as transferring from community college, filling out the FAFSA and California State University programs were covered. It was a success all around. According to FHS College and Career Clerk Karen Reid, "college reps were very impressed with out students, noting that many came prepared with thoughtful and well-researched questions."

Couldn't be there? No need to feel like you missed out. All workshops from this year and last have been recorded and can be found at www.fcusd.org/collegefair . This along with year round information at our College and Career Centers at   Folsom High , Cordova High and Vista del Lago , can help provide guidance and resources when looking for next steps after high school.
