"Her One Wild and Precious Life"
With the recent death of poet Mary Oliver, whose work touched deep veins among Unitarian Universalists, mid-winter is the perfect time to stop and appreciate the grace offered in her poetry. Running throughout it is a deep trust of the universe and a profound acceptance of the rhythms of life. The Adult Choir will sing Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth." Come, hear some of Oliver's poetry, and reflect on how and why it has touched us so.

"Belaying"
Hafiz wrote, "Out/of a great need/We are all holding hands/and climbing..." We think and speak often about trusting people in relationships, workplaces, and communities. But we speak less often about what we entrust to them. What happens when you put your life in the hands of other people? Practicing "habits of the heart" in spiritual communities helps us treat with care what we entrust to one another. An experience climbing above a Great Lake led to my reflections.

From the FUUSB Board of Trustees
Dan House, Board Vice President

Your Board of Trustees invites all members of the FUUSB community to discuss important plans regarding the direction of ministry at the FUUSB. As a community, your input during transition team listening sessions, as well as stewardship consultation with Mark Ewart, has led to deep discussions between board members and ministerial staff that we wish to share with the greater congregation. We encourage all members of the FUUSB to attend one of these sessions to hear a summary of your own feedback and discuss ideas for our lead ministry over the next 3 to 5 years.

The three sessions will be held on:
  • Sunday, February 3 at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary
  • Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parlors
  • Sunday, February 10 at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary
Childcare will be available for the February 3 and February 5 sessions.  Refreshments and snacks will be served at all three sessions.

Thank you from your Board of Trustees.

Groundhog Day Game Night
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

Come join UU families and friends for our Groundhog Day Game Night!

We will have games out to play and you are welcome to bring a favorite, as well. And because any gathering is more fun with food, we're having a potluck too, so bring a dish to share (skip the plates and utensils - we've got that covered!)

Come for a little bit or the whole time; bring all your ages (and your inner child, too) and play an old favorite or learn a new game (10-handed solitaire, anyone?). We look forward to having you join us!

We'll have childcare available in the nursery for the littlest, with some kids' games available if they choose.

Mark your calendar: Saturday, February 2 from 5-8 p.m. in the Community Room.

Theme Circles Registration
Rev. Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership

Registration is presently underway for our next season of Theme Circles! Groups will begin meeting at specific times during the third week of February, March, April, May and June to explore the themes of Trust, Journey, Wholeness, Curiosity, and Beauty.

Theme Circles consist of about eight to ten members who meet with a trained facilitator at specific monthly times to discuss, reflect, and explore the monthly spiritual theme. Participation in a Theme Circle is a wonderful way to make new friends, connect with old friends, and foster meaningful connections in our large congregation. After receiving and studying the monthly edition of The Path , participants choose a question or two to incorporate into their daily lives and then ultimately share that experience (or other thoughts or inspirations) when the group meets. Be aware that when you join a Theme Circle, you should make every effort to attend all meetings, although members will certainly understand your absence when you are out of town.

Sign-ups will extend online at this link through February 2. Each registrant will be asked to list first, second and third choice of group times. The sooner you sign up, the more likely you will get your first choice. You'll learn your Theme Circle Group assignment in early February.

If you have questions, email me at [email protected].

We look forward to another fabulous season of Theme Circles!

Rev. Andre

FUUSB  Immigration Justice Team
Carolyn Smiles

Over the next few months our FUUSB Immigration Justice Team will be offering opportunities to take actions regarding the separation and detention of children and parents seeking asylum at the U.S. southern border. There are children still needing to be reunited with their parents. There are successful alternatives to separation and detention. Opportunities for action will be offered after both services on certain Sundays in February and March beginning February 3.

Actions will include: a petition to Senators Leahy and Sanders; stamped postcards (with a written script to copy) to send to the Dept. of Homeland Security and the Dept. of Health and Human Services; and phone scripts.  We hope to offer opportunities for in-district visits to our senators and representatives in the spring.

Join Us for Good Food, Friendship and Music at the
February 9 FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse

Winter's settled in, there can be no doubt
It's tempting to hunker, and not to go out
But as we await, the return of the sun
Let's gather for music, good food, and some fun

Join us, dear friends, on Saturday night
To feast and make music, create our own light
We'll eat, tell stories, laugh and sing
At our monthly UU coffeehouse thing

We start with a potluck, right about six
You don't have to hassle, don't get in a fix
Bring a hot entrée, a salad or stew
If you can, something yummy, to nourish a few

Sign up, if you're psyched, for the open mic
Or sit back and listen, if that's what you'd like
Share a poem, a story, a solo, or song
Tap your feet, clap your hands, or perhaps hum along

All ages are welcome, all talents are relished
It's a pretty sweet scene, don't think I embellish
There's really not much, that you must do
Just one thing's important, and that's to bring you!

What : Our Monthly FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse
Who : Everyone! Friends and family  welcome
Where : The Parlors, First UU Society of Burlington

Racism in Unitarian Universalism
Book Series
Zoe Hart & Peggy Owen Sands

Over the past three years the Racial Justice Team has organized three services that looked at racism within Unitarian Universalism - both its historical roots and its present day reality. In the coming months we invite you to join us in going deeper with a series of book readings and discussions. Together we'll read and discuss three books.

Unitarian Universalists of Color is a collection of essays by UUs of color about their experience in UU congregations. Centering is a collection of essays by UU ministers of color about challenges they face in leading mostly white congregations. And Darkening the Doorways by Reverend Mark Morrison-Reid looks at the history of Unitarian Universalism that brought us to where we are today.

You can join us for one, some, or all of the books. If you're interested, contact Zoe Hart at
[email protected] . When we know who's interested, we can find dates and times that work well for as many of us as possible.

TRUUsT Report on the Experiences of Trans UUs
TRUUsT has released  a report that provides an unprecedented look at the experiences of trans Unitarian Universalists, based on a survey of hundreds of trans UUs conducted in spring 2018 by TRUUsT and the Unitarian Universalist Association's Multicultural Ministries office.

The report provides a portrait of who trans UUs are, shares trends in their experiences of inclusion and marginalization in UU congregations, gives a snapshot of the particular experiences of trans religious professionals, and offers actions that all Unitarian Universalists can take to improve the experiences of trans people within Unitarian Universalism.
