Early Childhood Department
Where do all the Animals Go in the Winter?
 In the winter, many animals that we see in our area seem to disappear. The children of Ganon Aleph wanted to know where they go. We learned that animals such as bears, bats, frogs and even snakes hibernate during the cold winter months. As the weather turns colder these animals eat large amounts of food to store up fat. This fat has two purposes, first it works as an extra layer under their skin to keep them warm and it is also used as energy for their bodies while they are sleeping.
Animals such as butterflies, wildebeest, birds and even whales migrate. They may travel thousands of miles to a warmer climate where vegetation grows and they can eat. And finally, there are some animals such as ptarmigan, the arctic fox and the arctic hare that actually change color to blend in with their snowy environment. This is known as camouflage.
The children loved learning about the wonderful ways animals adapt to their environments!
Musical כסאות in Gan Aleph!
This week Gan Aleph learned all about the letter כ in a fun and interactive way. After their mini Hebrew literacy lessons, Gan Aleph participated in an interactive game of Musical כסאות as an Aleph Bet review. While listening to the Aleph Bet song, the children walked around the chairs until the music stopped. The class reviewed the letter that was with the chair that had to be removed from the game. Gan Aleph certainly had a blast reviewing their Aleph Bet letters!

Lower School
Fifth Graders Complete Parshat Shmot!
Classes 5A and 5C have proudly completed Parshat Shemot! We are already up to Perek Zayin in Parshat Va'eira which begins our in depth analysis of the ten plagues. We will be studying why each specific plague was sent by Hashem, how the concept of מידה כנגד מידה is incorporated and the reactions of the Egyptians to each plague. Through the study of Rashi and other commentaries the classes will analyze how Pharaoh's outlook changed from the beginning of the plagues to the end of the plagues. The students are enjoying their Torah learning!
 Fifth Grade Immigration Unit
Class 5C has been busy indeed! As the culmination of our immigration unit, each student interviewed an U.S. immigrant. They composed a summary of all they learned about their immigrant's experience coming to America. Our fifth graders also asked their subject for a recipe that was important to them. In the end, the entire fifth grade published a cookbook complete with recipes, summaries, and photos of their immigrants!
Baking Cookies in Memory of Gil-Ad Shaer
This week we did a program with 5th grade in memory of Gil-Ad Shaer, one of the three boys who was a victim of terror in Gush Etzion four years ago. Gil-Ad liked to bake, so this month, his birthday month, people all around the world baked goodies and send it to other people.
5th grade packed cookies and gave them to Lower School students and explained about the project. You are invited to pay it forward and continue the cycle to spread the love and joy!
Third Annual STEM Night
Yavneh Academy's
Educational Technology Department
hosted its third annual Family STEM Night for students in grades 3-4 accompanied by their parents, grandparents or special adults. All who attended agreed it was an incredible event. This year, the event was
driven by the Middle School students who participated in our STEM leadership program. The STEM leaders researched and then created an activity. They then facilitated the activities for the participating families. The evening consisted of numerous interactive, hands-on activities, with an emphasis on robotics, engineering, and collaborative skills. These activities ranged from low-tech (build a straw house) to high tech (code a robot to complete a task). They encompassed all aspects of STEM including chemistry (self-inflating up balloons) and electricity (creating with paper circuitry). Click HERE for more photos!

Middle School
Sixth Graders Present Lunch and Learn
Yavneh Academy faculty members were treated to a Lunch and Learn given by the Mishnah students of class 6A. This was the culmination of a unit of project-based learning. Each mini-shiur was an original, innovative, and inspiring exploration of the themes found in an entire perek of Mishnah. Students built their shiurim into polished presentations, complete with source sheets! Click HERE for more photos!
Yavneh Academy Student Named Winner
of the Stock Market Game's Fall 2018 Competition
Sophia Esses has won Stock Market Game's Fall 2018 competition. Sophia accumulated a total profit of more than $19,000 in just three days and then spent weeks watching more than 220 teams from North Jersey Middle School's try to overtake her. Sophia finished more than $5,000 ahead of her nearest competition. In the total state competition, which includes high schools, Sophia finished in second place out of more than 1,800 teams.
We are very proud of Sophia's dedication to learning about the stock market. Her teacher, Mr. Don Cutler, has been successful now for 7 consecutive years in at least one of the three competitions offered by the Stock Market Game. We are very grateful for the opportunity to participate in this endeavor which promotes teaching children how to understand and invest in the stock market.
Dressy Clothing Drive
Our 6th Grade Girls are running a Chesed project beginning January 2nd. We will be collecting Bat Mitzvah/party dresses that your daughters are not wearing anymore. We will be donating these dresses to a girls' group home in Israel called Bayit Vtikvah (House of Hope). Bayit Vtikvah is a residential home for girls ages 6-18 whom the courts have removed from their homes due to serious abuse and neglect. Bayit Vtikvah is committed to helping each girl achieve her goals and reach her greatest potential by providing love, guidance, therapies and most important, hope.
There will be blue bins in the 600 wing foyer in front of the gym. We are also in need of people travelling to Israel who can take an extra piece of luggage and bring the donated dresses to Israel. (We will cover the cost of the extra luggage.)
