Volunteer Spotlight - Pat Tichenor
Alto section leader, Pat Tichenor, has been involved with music most of her life. She tells us, "My mother wanted me to be a concert singer, so I had some voice lessons.  After an unfortunate incident at a high school prom, I turned my attention to instruments and learned to play violin, French horn, and oboe."  Then, in college, Pat minored in music - voice again instead of playing.  Guess that prom thing worked itself out!  As a military wife, she traveled extensively and had the opportunity to sing with a number of different choruses and church choirs all over the world.  She says her most interesting choir experience was in South Korea.  In addition to singing in the alto section of the RCS and the Rockbridge Chamber Singers, Pat sings in the Lexington Presbyterian Church choir.  She continues to take voice lessons under the tutelage of fellow alto and professional singer, Christine Schadeberg.
When she isn't singing or traveling, Pat is a board member of the Friends of the Rockbridge Choral Society.  She gardens and works on her small farm in Timber Ridge where she puts her 18 years with the Master Gardeners to good use.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of the jobs that our volunteers do, please check in with the Friend's executive director, Melanie Griffis-Hooper.  Send her an email at admin@rcs.org to learn how you can use your non-vocal talents to help, and thanks!
Two Minute Shower Songs
People around the world are struggling for access to drinking water.  In late 2017, when the drought in South Africa was threatening to literally wipe out the water supply of Cape Town, the city's government asked its citizens to save water by taking showers that lasted 2 minutes or less.  As the government sought creative ways to get the word out, in November 2017 one of the country's leading insurance companies, Sanlam, came up with a brilliant idea.  They enlisted the help of some of South Africa's biggest pop stars who volunteered to remix some of their hit songs.  In short order they had an album of 10 two-minute songs.  The suggestion to citi  zens was to hit the play button, jump in the shower and be finished by the time the song was over.  It worked!  By June, 2018 Cape Town had reduced its water usage by more than 50%, and day zero - the date on which mandatory and severe water rationing would have taken effect - was avoided.   You can sing along here.
