The University of Western Cape (UWC) School of Public Health is seeking applications for two postdoctoral fellowships in the field of Health Policy and Systems linked to the two NRF/DST SARChI Chairs in the School.
Fellows will be required to register at the University of the Western Cape, and will contribute to the research areas of the two Chairs, which have complementary research program and which seek to consolidate a world-class hub in the global south in the field of health policy and systems research (HPSR).
The purpose of the SARCHI Postdoctoral Fellowship is to contribute to:
- career development in HPSR;
- building the field of HPSR with partners in South Africa and internationally;
- enhancement of the capacity of the UWC School of Public Health.
Postdoctoral Fellow with SARCHI Chair in Health Systems Governance (Prof Helen Schneider)
The Chair is advancing research around leadership and governance of health systems, including a focus on: 1) health system strengthening especially for primary health care, community-based services, and district health systems in the context of the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI); 2) practices of governance and accountability in health systems; 3) development of methodologies for undertaking research on governance in LMICs.
Postdoctoral Fellow with SARCHI Chair in Health Systems, Complexity and Social Change (Prof Asha George)
The Chair is advancing four streams of interlinking research: 1) Gender, intersectionality and other social power relations, as well as the social change methodologies to better understand and transform them, 2) Community health systems and how they are governed and networked across multiple stakeholders and health system levels, 3) Frontline health worker’s lived realities and how this influences the negotiated interfaces with quality improvement initiatives, including initiatives that review and respond to maternal deaths, 4) Multi-sectoral policy development and implementation that more holistically addresses how social determinants within health systems influences health outcomes for those most marginalised.
Academic Criteria:
Applicants must:
- have achieved a PhD in Public Health or a related field in the last five years. For applicants who did not obtain their qualification in South Africa, a SAQA certification or proof of SAQA application must be provided.
- have citizenship of a sub-Saharan African country or be an expatriate African. Preference will be given to South African citizens or permanent residents.
- have a strong academic record with evidence of research experience and peer-reviewed publications.
Candidates with project management experience and ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders are preferred.
The fellowship is initially tenable for one year starting in 2019, and is valued, tax-free at a maximum of R300,000 per annum. Renewal for a second year will be considered depending on satisfactory academic progress and continued funding.
