BRUCE, Alexander Duncan (1868-1956)
 
HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT EARLY ONTARIO LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION

These Bruce family members were very successful Scottish emigrants in 1842 to Upper Canada (Markham area) in business, farming, milling (Carrick Mills renamed later to Bruce's Mill). KOONTZ, Dean (b1945)
 
Dean Koontz is a best-selling American author in the genres of suspense, horror fiction, science fiction, thriller, and fantasy. He has also used approximately ten different pen names. His books have sold more than 450 million copies. Many of his books have been made into films.

NORRIS, William Edward (1847-1925)
 
W.E. Norris was a prolific English novelist and writer of short stories. Son of the Chief Justice of Ceylon. He was born in London and educated at Eton College. He travelled abroad, abandoned the idea of joining the diplomatic service, qualified as a barrister in 1874, and eventually chose to follow a literary career. He wrote more than sixty novels. He lived in Torquay. During the winter he went to Algiers or the Riviera. Some of his best known works are Matrimony (1881), My Friend Jim (1886), The Widower (1898), Nature's Comedian (1904), and Pauline (1908).

PRICE, Nancy (1880-1970)
 
Nancy Price was an English actress on stage and screen, poet, novelist, editor, essayist, and memoirist. She was one of the leading lights of the British theatre in the twentieth century. She began her stage career in 1899 and played over 440 parts during her long career, notably the grandmother in Whiteoaks (with performances in plays by Pirandello, Ibsen, Zola, etc.). She worked with F.R. Benson, Henry Irving, and Mrs. Patrick Campbell. She also appeared in over twenty films and BBC TV shows. In 1930 she founded the People's National Theatre in conjunction with the critic J.T. Grein, and launched its first season at the Fortune Theatre. In 1933 she was appointed its Honorary Director and carried on the enterprise at various theatres until 1950. She was awarded the CBE in 1950 and retired from stage and films two years later.

The collection contains material dating from 1910 to 1958, a total of 95 items, specifically, 76 issues of two related magazines, 11 letters, 8 photos, 3 books, 1 album with ephemera, 1 cigarette card and 1 program. LOWELL, Amy Lawrence [1874-1925]
 
Amy Lowell was an American poet critic, and woman of letters who became a powerful leader in the modernist poetry movement known as Imagism.  She was posthumously was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1926.

The collection consists of three items dating from 1887 to 1920. Lowell's first publication, a very scarce broadside, and a typed signed letter.

COUGHLIN, Father Charles Edward (1891-1979)
 
Father Charles E. Coughlin was an American Canadian Roman Catholic Priest born in Hamilton, Ontario and ordained to the priesthood in Toronto in 1916 with the Basilian Fathers. He taught at Assumption College, also operated by the Basilians, in Windsor, Ontario.
When his religious order was re-organized in 1923, he moved to Detroit. In 1926, he ministered at the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan, and began his radio broadcasts, reaching an audience of 30 million people. In 1934, he organized the National Union for Social Justice (later the Christian Front) through which he argued that neither capitalism nor democracy had a future in America. However, he often engaged in anti-Semitic attacks, supported fascist policies, and became a harsh critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His public career ended in May 1942 with the forced cancellation of his radio program and his newspaper, Social Justice. He served as a parish pastor until his retirement in 1966.

John Kendrick Bangs was an American author, humorist, editor, and satirist. and the creator of modern Bangsian fantasy the school of fantasy writing that sets the plot wholly or partially in the afterlife.

LIVESAY, Dorothy (1909-1996)
 
Dorothy Livesay is considered one of Canada's pre-eminent poets and the winner of two Governor General's Awards (1944, 1947). Following the publication of Green Pitcher (1928) when she was only nineteen years of age, she published Signpost (1932). This was followed by twenty-two other volumes of poetry and three memoirs.

This Dorothy Livesay collection material dating from 1928 to 1987, specifically, thirteen books and booklets of poetry, and three pieces of ephemera (a university convocation invitation 2 UofT programme booklets:).

FIELD, Eugene (1850-1895)
 
Eugene Field, an American journalist, editor, poet, and best known for his children's poetry and humorous essay. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. Field attended several colleges but took no degree (Williams College, Knox College, the University of Missouri). He worked for many newspapers until the Chicago Daily News offered him a job writing a humorous column called "Sharps and Flats". He also published many volumes of poetry and prose. Dubbed "The Poet of Childhood", Field died of a heart attack on 4 November 1895.

A collection of letters and ephemera pasted into a leather scrapbook, 10¼× 9½".
The collection has 41 items in total dating from 1889 to 1912, specifically, 16 letters, 13 ephemera, and 12 posthumous postcards.

GODDEN, Margaret Rumer (1907-1998)
 
Rumer Godden was a poet, memoirist, an English author of more than 60 fiction and nonfiction and children's books. She was born in Sussex, but grew up in India, in Narayanganj. Many of her 60 books are set in India. Nine of her works were made into films, most notably Black Narcissus in 1947.

JAMESON, Mrs. Anna Brownell, (née Murphy) [1794-1860]

7-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches, dated Saturday with no month or year. Addressed to Mrs. Hall, likely to Mrs. S.C. Hall, making arrangements to visit Mrs. Hall in the country. Very good condition.
Anna Maria Hall was an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall".
Mrs. Hall's first recorded contribution to literature is an Irish sketch called 'Master Ben,' which appeared in The Spirit and Manners of the Age, January 1829, pp. 35-41 et seq. Other tales followed. Eventually they were collected into a volume entitled Sketches of Irish Character, 1829, and henceforth she became 'an author by profession.'  She edited her own annual, The Juvenile Forget-Me-Not (1826-1834). She published in many Journals and Magazines and wrote many other books.

Anna Brownell Jameson, the multi-talented Victorian Irish author and art critic was one of the few female writers in the late 1820s to gain notoriety as not only an amazing writer, but also as a strong supporter of the feminist movement in all genres of literature.

The printed Manly MacDonald "The Red Mill" image, slightly out of register when printed, was trimmed to size and mounted on the Christmas Greeting Card. Unsigned inside. Printed on back is  Manly MacDonald's name and Canadian Artists Series   25130

According to the previous owner, the original oil painting was painted in the 1930s at Bruce's Mill (his father watched him do some of his work around the Mill) and this Christmas Card is a reproduction of that painting.
