Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Lake Nona Middle School administration and the Jackson family, Season's Greetings!

Lake Nona Science

Mrs. Carellas's class and Ms.  McNear's class are out of this world! After everyone learned about the universe, galaxies, and our solar system and planets, each student was assigned a planet to study and report on to others.  Then, everyone practiced rotating and revolving around the sun (above)!  A great time making the standards and curriculum come to life was had by all!

Musical Tour
Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Chorus take to the road for holiday performances . . .

Advanced Orchestra and Jazz Band traveled this past week to nearby elementary schools and other Lake Nona community areas such as Eagle Creek Elementary, North Lake Park Elementary, Veterans Assisted Living Facility and Watercress Assisted Living. LNMS has been sharing their talents and seasonal spirit with our community neighbors. Our chorus participated in the "Let Our Hearts Be Filled With Gladness" performance with Innovation Middle School and Lake Nona High School at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke's.

Happy Winter Break to All Our Knights!

Project Lead The Way
Things have been hopping up in the LNMS Media Center in the last couple months. Along with our normal "goings on," our media center has begun a partnership with the Project Lead the Way classes.  Each Friday the students in the classes come to the media center and use our Makerspace items such as a 3D Pen, Ozobots, Spheros, and other items (please see the student photos just below). Students will spend three weeks per item and then rotate to the next, therefore increasing their exposure to different STEM activities. We also brought out some of the items for out STEAM Knight in the cafeteria. The 3D pen and Sphero Bolts were the big hits!

Speaking of SSYRA books ... my favorite so far has been Ghost by Jason Reynolds.

Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team - a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves.

Running. That's all Ghost (real name Castle Cranshaw) has ever known. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons - it all started with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems - and running away from them-until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who sees something in Ghost: crazy natural talent. If Ghost can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. Can Ghost harness his raw talent for speed, or will his past finally catch up to him?

E Books
This year we have quite a few of the books available in electronic format. Students just need to be signed in to their launchpad. Then open the Library Research Tools - Follett
Destiny. They can then search for any of the following titles and read them electronically.
  • Short
  • Ghost
  • Frogkisser
  • Restart
  • Epic Fail
  • Crack in the Sea
  • First Rule of Punk
  • Girl Who Could Not Dream
  • Van Gogh Deception
  • Forest of Wonders
  • Surrender the Key (Curse of the Boggin)
