LADY, MY SPIRIT GUIDE

I was visiting Ghost Ranch, in Abiquiu. I enjoy the red rocks area because I feel a closeness to the ancestors there, in God’s country. There was a horse wandering the grounds; I was told her name was Lady and she was 32 years old. Whenever I visited ghost ranch, over the years, Lady was always there, munching on grass by the path leading from the chapel to the dining hall. I would bring her treats of apple or carrots, as I am sure other visitors also did.

The last visit, I noticed that Lady was kneeling on all fours, something horses only do when they are ill. I sat down in the pasture, rubbing her nose and patting her neck. Lady’s breathing was labored, her carotid pulse in her neck was weak. (Yes, I can find a pulse in a horse). Her eyes were cloudy and sad. I kept talking to her, telling her I would not leave her. Occasionally people would pass by. One asked to take a picture; another asked if we needed help? I asked her to please notify administration.

As time went on, Lady gave in to her weakness, thrusting her arthritic legs straight out in front of her, her head on my lap. Horses never do that; they can only breathe properly if standing. Lady and I communed together for hours. I tried various means to get her to stand but nothing worked. Finally a ranch hand came. I shared my concerns about her breathing. The man replied “She LIKES to lay in the sun.” I guess he thought I was just some lady who knew nothing about horses. I asked the ranch hand to help me get her up. Eventually, by pushing and prodding, we were able to get the horse to stand, but she was very shaky.

Ghost Ranch had Lady on hospice care, meaning no extra ordinary means to sustain life. But according to my Navajo Tradition, all living beings have value and our spirits are intertwined. My hope was that as Lady passed from this life into the next, that my love enveloped her and protected her from fear or pain. Just as the Creator loves people, The Creator is also with beings like Lady.

Navajos have worked with horses since the Spanish brought them to this land 400 years ago, but they aren’t considered spirit guides as eagles or bears are. But Lady’s spirit will be with me from now on, as a guide for how to live my life with dignity and compassion, because of time we spent together in solitude, in a lonely pasture at Ghost Ranch.

MOUNTAIN CATHEDRALS JULY HIKE
July 18, 2020

Meet in east parking lot at St John’s UMC 7:30 am | Plan to return by 12:30 pm

I walk and pray. It’s been my practice for several years. On a recent walk, I found myself singing the hymn “His Eye is on the Sparrow” (singing in my heart and soul). Maybe it was walking among the trees or taking note of wild flowers, it could have been the sparrows, I’m not really sure, the words just came to me…. “Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come? Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home? When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is he; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.”

The song was inspired by Matthew 6:26 as Jesus talks with those who have walked with him around the sea of Galilee ,“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Later in Matthew (10:29-31), Jesus continues on this theme: “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Fear ye not, indeed. God’s eye is upon sparrows, robins, finches, hummingbirds, and all of us… all of us.

Remembering that God remembers us is important work. It gathers us to God’s presence and as the hymn suggests it shores up our despair, our discouragement, our loneliness, and our longing… “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.” Scores of people have recorded this song, Amy Greer played it for worship last Sunday, it was beautiful. For me, walking and praying and singing the song named a sorrow I could not quite get at in other ways. And it opened a space in the presence of birds, trees, sky and God, to remember God’s watchful care. I invite you to come walk… to come pray… to come and find a quiet center… to walk together, safely distanced of course.

This month we travel to Juan Tomas Open Space, it is a 3.7 mile loop hike that begins at an elevation of a little over 7500 feet and goes to a low point of approximately 7,300 feet. There are lots of trees: pines, juniper, and pinons. It is rated as an easy to moderate trail. Driving distance from the church is about 20 miles.

St John’s UMC protocols require that we wear masks while on campus at the church. The bathrooms will NOT be opened, there is a bathroom at the Sandia Ranger District on the way out to the trailhead, where we can stop. Plan to take separate cars, families may ride together. The parking area at the trailhead has space for about 6-8 cars, when it is empty. There is other parking nearby if needed.

As with other hikes we will share scripture readings and reflections, we will also celebrate communion, with individual cups and wafers, hand-sanitizer will be available. Please bring a snack lunch and water. Sun-screen and hats are recommended.

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED? Point 3b: God wants to give you abundant life.
St. John’s email Bible study returns to our study of salvation, and in particular to the idea that God’s plan for your salvation is broader than you think. Although there’s nothing in the Bible about “prosperity gospel,” scripture does say that God’s plan for your salvation includes a desire that you be healthy, safe, and comfortable and that you enjoy life in constant relationship with him.  Download the study guide, or sign up for daily study tips by email by writing or calling Regina Hunter at drhunter@nmia.com or 294-2877.

JULY SPECIAL OFFERING: ZUNI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For many years St. John's has had a special relationship with our neighbor, Zuni Elementary School. For example, over the years, we have provided school supplies, backpacks, after school programs, and a Back to School Luncheon for the staff.

This year, as you can imagine, Zuni's needs are a bit different. Hand Sanitizers and wipes, kleenex and pump soap top the list! You can donate in kind on Saturday nights. (See separate article for details) Or, of course, you may send monetary donations to the church any time.

Finally, please keep the students and staff of Zuni ( and all the schools in town) in your prayers. Starting up again will be different and stressful for everyone.
