LOISAIDA    MISSION    MILESTONES    SUPPORT   CONTACT
[12/22/2018]

We are proud of our history, and of the work done during the last five years since the new Loisaida Center reopened with the vital mission of maintaining the tremendous influence of this iconic im/migrant neighborhood. From eco-urban innovation, to an expanded sense of the role of culture in the place-keeping of our distinct character, to the celebration of our community's hybrid spirit and collaborative art practices, the Loisaida Inc. ethos is inclusive.

In these five years, Loisaida has established itself as a veritable arts and culture organization situated at the vanguard of Latinx social practice. Under new leadership our impact has grown tremendously, and we have established numerous and distinct multi-generational programs, including :

  • Original Productions and Exhibitionsconcretely engaging hidden histories, and the multi-generational intersections of identities; generating living archives, as well as renewed historical interpretations of neglected legacies of Puerto Rican, Latinx, and Asian cultural and civic contributions to neighborhood identities in New York City.
  • Artistic Residency Program: serving as the only Latinx multi-disciplinary and social practice residency program in Lower Manhattan.
  • Senior DaysBohemian Nights, the annual Loisaida Festival, and the Production of Nabe workshops series, book presentations/talks, and trainings round out our programming, as we expand to include cutting-edge youth and workforce development programs, as well as incubation space for community startups that are mission aligned.

In the new year, with generous funding from New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, New York City Councilmember Carlina Rivera, and Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, Loisaida is poised to fill the void with  ' El Semillero' (The Seedbed) , a space/initiative that will provide moveable prototyping and coding technical equipment, 3D printing and cutting, carpentry, screen printing, broadcasting, music, film, TV production/editing support, and textile design facilities.

Today, all of our operations are located at the intersection of preservation and innovation, bolstering media access and training for emergent media producers and communities of color to do research, discover hidden legacies, and document their own narratives.

As a non-profit cultural community center in the heart of the Lower East Side it is important for us to continue to provide opportunities for Latinx creatives, and programming at no cost or highly subsidized rates. At this time of exponential growth, we cannot do this without your help.

Please join other New Yorkers who believe in protecting Puerto Rican and Latino social and historical contributions and the importance of sustaining a Downtown stronghold for multi-generational and multi-disciplinary cultural workers and residents to explore, generate and organize our community.
