MISSION SUPPORT
AT WORK:
OUR JOURNEY WITH THE GLOBAL CHURCH
|
|
By The Rev. Carol E.A. Fryer, Director of Spiritual Care and Church Relations, Wartburg; and Chair of
MNYS Tanzania Companionship Committee
Since April 5, 1998, the
Metropolitan New York Synod
has had a companion relationship with the
North Western Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania.
Kibeta English Medium Primary School (KEMPS) began in 2001. The school had been given to the diocese by the government.
The MNYS commitment to the NWD is to support Christian Education. We established a
Tanzanian Endowment Fund
to provide money for projects in education, particularly sending teachers from the U.S. to teach at KEMPS. We have been sending teachers to KEMPS since 2001—
for 18 years now!
Other projects our synod has supported over the years include:
- Rebuilding churches after they were set on fire
- Providing funds to rebuild, after an earthquake did much damage in Bukoba
- Awarding scholarships to children who would not otherwise be able to go to school
- Replacing the bus that transported children to and from KEMPS
- Building dormitories, classrooms and a dining hall at KEMPS
- Providing support for HUYAWA—a program that cares for women and children affected by HIV-AIDS.
- Raising money to fight Malaria and support the ELCA program to combat malaria in Africa
The covenant from 1998 states that the MNYS and the NWD commit themselves to:
- Praying for, witnessing to, and encouraging one another, as both bodies seek to serve Christ in our localities
- Learning more about one another, as friends, partners and fellow members of the one body of Christ
- Sharing our struggles, challenges, joys and new possibilities for the mutual upbuilding of the People of God
- Providing opportunities for mutual exchange of lay people, clergy and judicatory staff, in order for us to sincerely learn to know one another as friends and Christians.
And, especially, expand our understanding that the body of Christ has no geographical boundaries, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color or socio-economic status, and seeks mutuality among partners.

The mission support of our congregations makes it possible for us to walk together with others in the mission and ministry of the Metropolitan New York Synod and to support ministries of the ELCA.
All mission support for the fiscal year 2018 (ending on January 31, 2019), should be received in the synod office by
February 8, 2019.

STORY OF OUR SYNOD:
MY VISIT TO KEMPS
|
|
By
The Rev. Margay Jo Whitlock
, member of our
Tanzania Companionship Committee
August 2018. I am with the synod Delegation in Bukoba, Tanzania. We are there to see with our own eyes the ministry our Companionship Diocese is doing in the North Western Diocese. We are especially keen to visit Kibeta English Medium Primary School, KEMPS, for short.
KEMPS is the school for which the Metro New York Synod created an endowment over a decade ago. The income from the endowment funds our Synod’s sponsorship of an English-speaking teacher. Several of the previous teachers we have sponsored now serve on our Tanzania Companionship Committee.
As we arrived at the school, the students were lined up on both sides of the road, singing IN ENGLISH, “This is the day that the Lord has made.” After welcoming us in song, they toured us around the campus. We saw the dorms, the classrooms, and eventually all assembled in the auditorium. Each “standard” (we would say each “grade” or “class”) presented something to show their learning. It was heartwarming to see the level of accomplishment they achieve with so few resources. This was topped off with an excellent dinner.
The high point for me was visiting with Melanie Nelson, our teacher whom I had recruited the summer before. I had met Teacher Melanie at a Fourth of July party. “
And what do you do?” I said, by way of conversation.
"I’m a retired teacher,” she replied.
“
Do you want to go to Tanzania?” I asked. (Our committee was looking for someone.)
Melanie’s eyes got very wide. “
How did you know?” she said.
It was a Holy Spirit moment.
It was a Mission in Action moment.
Or as my Grandmother was fond of saying, “God moves in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform.”

In
2019
, the
Metropolitan New York Synod will send 52%
of what is received for mission support to the ELCA Churchwide administration in Chicago, which supports new congregations, missionaries, seminaries, colleges, universities, campus ministries, early childhood centers, elementary schools, outdoor ministries, social ministry organizations, advocacy, and community development on a national scale.

Partnership dollars come back to synods and congregations from the ELCA
via grants, services, programs, staff, and resources. All mission support, including subsidized congregations, is a sign of our partnership in the Gospel.
In addition to helping us stay connected, completing this form makes your congregation eligible for synod grants.

Dear Pastor, Parish Officer or Parish Administrator:
