The Federal Communications Commission has fast-tracked a new set of rules that could preemptively limit the authority of state and local governments to guide and guard the implementation of next-generation wireless communication devices, known as "small cells." Many states, including Maryland, have debated industry-supported measures to limit local zoning and oversight regarding these structures - but the far-reaching federal order could preclude much of that debate even before it (re)starts.
