30th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act
Sunday, July 26th marked the 30th anniversary of the passing of landmark civil rights legislation, the American with Disabilities Act. This act was the world's first legislation that addressed equality for people with disabilities. The ADA Anniversary is a time to reflect positively on a law that has made a great impact on the lives of people with disabilities. Learn more about the ADA here.
Did You Know - The Origins of the Safety Vest
"It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't go with anything, but it could save your life" was a slogan in an advertisement for safety vests. High-visibility safety vests have been a part of personal protection equipment, particularly in the construction field. While the safety vest has not been a high-fashion piece, it has played a crucial role in the overall effort to reduce fatalities and injuries in highway work zones. Learn more about the history of this life-saving garment here.
Pedestrian Safety
In 2018, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic crash every 84 minutes. This equates to more than 17 people per day, and 121 a week on average . At night, the decreased visibility increases the likelihood of death, and it is critical that drivers are aware of pedestrian crossings and exercise caution. Additionally, pedestrians can make themselves more visible with reflective clothing or carrying a light. How the roads and sidewalks are designed plays another crucial role, and the Federal Highway Administration created this road diet video, which is a tool for increasing pedestrian safety.
