Teacher Feature - Alexis Fulton

Ms. Fulton has been teaching for 15 years and plans on teaching for 15 more. She has taught all levels of high school English and all areas of high school science for public schools in both Arizona and Texas. She currently teaches 9th grade Chemistry and 8th grade Literature and Composition for GreatHearts. Ms. Fulton got her undergraduate from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, her first masters was from Wayland Baptist University in San Antonio, Texas, and she will graduate with a second masters from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina this May. She grew up in small towns in south central Texas and calls the area around Hallettsville, Texas “home base” when asked where she’s from. When asked to describe herself in three words she said she is “organized, determined, and optimistic”.
How do you manage your time between being a school teacher, teaching college classes, taking college courses, and raising a family? What are your tips for managing time and staying organized?
Ms. Fulton has 6 children in total: 3 stepdaughters (twin 13 year-olds and 1 of age 16), 2 sons (ages 4 and 6), and 1 daughter (age 1). She uses a calendar(s), makes lists, and refers to lots of schedules. She says she has a reliable support system so if things start to unravel she can call for backup and she does her best to communicate early and often with her colleagues and those around her.
What makes teaching at GreatHearts special and what makes it different from teaching at other schools?
She responded, “teaching at GreatHearts allows me the opportunity to treat my career as what it really is, a calling. I get to work with amazing colleagues and an incredible student body in an organization that treats people as individuals rather than numbers. I get to pursue my love of my content alongside my love of teaching through conversation, exploration, and wonder. We can focus on finding the beauty in the order of the natural world and in understanding how it works, but still take the time to enjoy the goodness of academic leisure and the company of others equally passionate about finding truth.”
What do you think are the three most important qualities for an educator to have?
She said that caring compassion, curiosity, and flexibility are the most important qualities for an educator have.
What is the best advice that you can give to seniors leaving for college?
She said, “ enjoy every minute. Don’t get so caught up in looking forward that you forget to be present now!“

Parent Education Night-
Stress & Coping in Students

What is stress? What does it look like during different developmental stages?
This informational presentation will provide information on what is “typical” for students, and how stress can affect a students daily life. We will look at how environmental factors can play a part, as well explore constructive coping skills that parents can teach their students in order to build a resilient child. The goal is to increase knowledge about stress and coping, provide insight into symptoms, and build skills to support our scholars in managing their feelings.

Winter Concert Update
Due to the large numbers of students enrolled in Music and Choir this year, along with the desire to have receptions post-performance, The Fine Arts Department, in conjunction with NPX administration, have decided to change the date of the High School and Honors Choir Winter Concert to
Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Calvary North Church
.
Call time for ALL students is 5:00pm at the church.
This concert will be for 9th and 10th grade Choir, as well as the Middle School & Honors Choirs. The team felt splitting the concerts was in the best interest of students, their families, and the teachers tasked to supervise.
The Middle School Winter Concert will still take place on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Calvary North Church.
Concert Dress Code:
Gentlemen:
Black dress pants, black dress shoes (NO tennis shoes), black socks, black belt, white long-sleeved button-down dress. shirt with collar. They may use their long-sleeved white Oxford uniform shirts. Long, plain, Black tie. Please check ahead of time for proper fit of all items. Jewelry and accessories such as watches/ bracelets should be kept to a minimum. Hair should be neatly-combed and out of the face.
Ladies:
Black skirt (A line/Circle skirt) or black pants with a white top (must be dressier than a T-shirt and not sheer). Skirts must follow regular school dress code rules regarding length. Students may also choose to wear a black dress (long or knee length). For knee length dresses/skirts, opaque black tights must be worn. All dresses/ tops must have some type of sleeve. No sleeveless, off the shoulder, or thin straps are allowed. No sheer materials. A black sweater could be worn if top has no sleeve. For shoes, please follow the school dress code. Black, closed-toe flats are best since there will be a lot of walking/standing/ walking up stairs. No excessive hair accessories or jewelry, please. Leggings are not permitted. Hair should be worn so it is out of the face.
