A Christmas Note:
A Blessed Christmas to my wonderful parishioners,

Simply Christmas
Reported by Mrs. Arpi Bekian
If in your hectic holiday schedule, this year's "Simply Christmas' concert was not on your radar, you missed a great opportunity to put yourself in the Christmas spirit. With the ever present commercialism and the stress induced by it, we are robbed of the pleasures of enjoying the season of our Lord's birth. This, albeit for a fleeting moment in time, was what we all needed.

The concert began with our own St. Sarkis "Datevig" children's choir, conducted by Mrs. Haikouhi Megerian and assisted by Mrs. Janet Marcarian at the piano, singing a song dedicated to the 30 th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Armenia written by Charles Aznavour 'Pour Toi Armenie'. I could have listened to them all day. What else can transcend all our problems and anxiety more than the calming voices of a group of children? They were a delight!

Then, just when you thought it could not get any better than this-it did! The children's choral group was followed, again by a St. Sarkis veteran, Deborah Agopian and her merry making friends singing traditional carols. To the amazement of the crowd, Deborah's non Armenian friends sang part of the Noels in Armenian. It certainly got the audience going, and many cheers were heard.
It goes without saying that Ms. Agopian and classmates put a lot of work and effort into this performance, and they were wonderful, and so cheerful. She is a talent that St. Sarkis is very lucky to call its own.
"Ugly Christmas Sweater" Party
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian
On Friday, December 14th, the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group and the AYF Hyortik Juniors hosted a Christmas party for all of their members and families. The theme was "ugly christmas sweaters" and everyone who attended certainly seemed to embrace the idea. There were over 130 guests who attended, all dressed in fun and silly Christmas themed clothing. We were honored with the presence of our Prelate, Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Der Nareg Terterian and Der Mesrob Lakissian among our attendees, who all showed their wonderful sense of humor and also participated in the evening's dresscode.

The guests enjoyed a delicious dinner, prepared by Yeretsgin Annie, as well as an awesome selection of music played by our DJ for the night, Greg Dostur. Greg certainly got everyone in the mood with his Christmas music, and the youth seemed to really enjoy the Armenian dance music, which got them on the dance floor, having fun and even doing traditional Armenian Shoorch bar.  The entire evening had a wonderful festive atmosphere, with Chadrjian Hall decorated beautifully for Christmas, and a fun photo booth area set up with silly props for everyone to gather, snap pictures and laugh around.

In addition to the festive celebrations, we also celebrated the successes of both of the host organizations, the Salt & Light Youth Group and the AYF Hyortik chapter. Two Hyortik junior executive members, Aris Givilekian and Aren Bedrossian, did a wonderful job presenting to the room about AYF activities and the various local and regional events that members can participate in, as well as the most recent and very successful ACE weekend that the New York Hyortik chapter hosted. Additionally, Nyrie Bedrossian and Raffi Nenejian spoke on behalf of Salt & Light Youth Group, reflecting on the growth and accomplishments of the youth group over the past year and a half. They particularly wanted to recognize and thank various committee members and group facilitators for their commitment to the youth group program with a small token of appreciation. In their remarks, it was mentioned that the success and growth of the youth group would not be possible without the commitment and dedication of our facilitators: Lena Felice, Yn. Annie, Aleene Voskerijian, Liza Kabarajian, Arev Mouradian, Raffi Nenejian, Razmig Nenejian, Michael Gostanian, Edmond Demirjian and of course Der Nareg Terterian. Following the recognition, Der Nareg addressed the room with some insightful words about the importance of having active and vibrant youth organizations within with our church. Archbishop Anoushavan then spoke enthusiastically to the youth about how important it is for the youth organizations to work together and encourage our youth to be active in their church and their Armenian community and he encouraged the adults in the room to take an active role in becoming leaders for the youth.

The night continued with music, dancing, and laughter and was a wonderful way for our community members, adults and youth together, to celebrate the joy and love of the Christmas Season. Looking forward to many more success celebrations for both the Salt & Light Youth Group and the AYF Hyortik chapter in 2019!

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14)
Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' " And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."
It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (19.11-28)
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them-bring them here and kill them in front of me."
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
DAVID THE PROPHET KING; HOLY APOSTLE JAMES
This Monday (December 24) the Armenian Church commemorates David the Prophet King and the Holy Apostle James the Brother of the Lord.

David was the youngest of eight brothers and was brought up to be a shepherd where he learned courage, tenderness, and caring. David became the second King of Israel. In the Bible, the name David belongs solely to him, which indicates the unique place he had as an ancestor and forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the New Testament there are more than 50 references to David, including the title given to Jesus-Son of David. David was a poet and the author of some of the Psalms.

James the Apostle, called "Brother of the Lord," probably because of his close relationship with Jesus, was granted a special appearance of the Lord after the Resurrection. He is believed to have been a first cousin of the Lord, or as some biblical scholars have suggested, a son of Joseph. After the Resurrection and the Ascension, while the other apostles scattered all over the world, James remained in Jerusalem where he served as the Bishop and became a leading spokesman of the early church.

ST. STEPHEN, FIRST DEACON AND FIRST MARTYR
On Tuesday (December 25) the Armenian Church commemorates St. Stephen, the first deacon and proto-martyr. After Christ's ascension, the apostles went about spreading the Word. It soon became apparent that more people were needed to serve the growing church community. Seven worthy individuals were called upon to serve the Holy Altar and called "deacons" (sarkavag). The most noteworthy of the seven was Stephen, described as a "man full of faith and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5). The Feast of St. Stephen is a popular and important commemoration in the Armenian Church; it is a day to honor all deacons of the church. Stephen became the first martyr of the Church and is therefore called the "proto-martyr." The only information about his life and death is in the Book of Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:8 and 8:2).
