December 2018 - Issue No. 41
St. Bon's Alumni Christmas Social

Alumni enjoy a drink while catching up.

Members of the Class of 2018 with Mr. McGrath.

Thanks to all who came out to celebrate Christmas at another wonderful Christmas Social! We had classes represented from 1965 through to 2018! We got to see a few faces we haven't seen all year and share a drink while catching up. A few people went home with some awesome door prizes, from St. Bon's clothing to gift cards.

What's Happening at SBC?
  • Our Grade 2 classes led a beautiful Advent service for our Primary grades in our school Chapel. They did a wonderful job preparing everyone for the Holiday Season and reminding us all of the true meaning of Christmas.
  • Our school Advent Liturgy was held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Monday, December 3. Celebrated by Archbishop Currie, this was the last Mass he celebrated for our school before he retires this month. We thank His Grace for always supporting St. Bon's and our Mission.

Our Grade 2's leading the Advent Ceremony.

Grade 1 teacher, Brad Glynn, and two Grade 1 students bring up the Offertory at the 2018 Advent Liturgy.
  • Band Director Vincenza Etchegary and the St. Bon's Wind Ensemble entered the CBC Music Class Challenge for the second year in a row. Last year they took home the top prize in their category, and this year they made the Top 10. Click here to watch their video entry of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".
  • On December 12, we held our first "5 for Food" Campaign. Students brought in $5 to be able to have a dress down day, with all money collected going to The Gathering Place to provide meal cards to those in need over the holidays. The Gathering Place serves meals to those in need, many of whom would not otherwise have a meal that day. They will be closed a few days over Christmas. We were able to provide 200 $10 Tim Horton's gift cards to help their guests cget a meal on those days.
  • Our school has participated in many other giving initiatives this holiday season. Our Grade 3 classes collected art supplies to help cheer up children who are at the Janeway Hospital through the Holiday Season, while the Grade 5's hosted a Social Justice Movie and Popcorn Sale, raising $730 for Canadian Jesuits International, an organization dedicated to global charity and social justice initiatives. Our Junior and Senior High Social Justice Club held a bake sale, raising $525 for the Single Parents' Association of NL. Various classes sang and brought Christmas cheer to those who may feel lonely this Christmas at St. Patrick's Mercy Home, The Veteran's Pavilion, and Presentation Convent.
Staff present Ms. Joanne Thompson, The Gathering Place's Executive Director, with 200 $10 gift cards for their guests.

Our Grade 5's present Fr. Earl Smith, SJ and Br. Joe Frechette, SJ with their donation for CJI.

Our Grade 5 class went to The Veterans' Pavilion to sing carols, make crafts and spend some time getting to know the residents.

The Social Justice Club presents a $525 cheque to the Single Parents' Association of NL.
  • The St. Bon's Ultimate Frisbee Team are the Champions of the 2018 Mount Pearl Senior High invitational tournament. MVP's of the championship game were Ashley S '19 and Kyle R '20. Most Spirited Player went to Sarah C '19.
Our Championship-winning Ultimate Team

  • December saw three successful Christmas concerts at St. Bon's. Our Senior Choirs and Bands were featured on December 5th, our Beginning and Concert Bands, along with our Elementary students, entertained us on December 10th, and finally our Primary students performed on December 13th. Congratulations to all teachers and students involved. Each concert was filled to capacity.
Our Grade 2's sang "God is With Me" in an under the sea themed, choreographed performance.

Our Beginning Band showcased how far they have come and how much they have learned in just a few months.

A Christmas Message
Dear Alumni,

Once again we find ourselves asking "where did the year go?" The Christmas season is here and, as we prepare to partake in the festivities, let us reflect on the wonderful accomplishments that we have been so fortunate to witness. The provincial, national and international achievements of not only the students of our proud alma mater but our alumnus as well have once again been outstan ding.

As well, we said "good bye" to cherished school mates who also  shared in the glory of our distinguished history. The cycle of this wonderful thing that we call "Life" continues. So as we celebrate the Special Birth of Christmas let us share in the Spirit of giving and helping where we can, while we ourselves get to enjoy the gifts that we have been given.

On behalf of your Alumni Committee,
I would like to sincerely thank you all for your kind support in so many ways and wish our alumni, students, fa culty and staff, parents, and all of our friends a most special Christmas, and may 2019 be the best year of your lives.

Dave Jackman '65,
Chair,
St.Bon's Alumni Committee
