Students Recognized at November 4 Board of Education Meeting
At the November 4 North Royalton Board of Education meeting, Board members and administrators recognized various students and staff for their commitment to excellence, whether it be through academics, arts, athletics, community service or for exhibiting core values.
ALBION, ROYAL VIEW AND VALLEY VISTA ELEMENTARY
At various times throughout the school year, the three elementary buildings will combine forces to highlight various aspects of the District's Strategic Plan. This month, the elementary school principals focused on collaboration among schools and also community and families. "As we get closer to the time when we all move in together at the new North Royalton Elementary School, the community will see more and more opportunities for students from the three schools to come together in a collaborative way," said Principal Kirk Pavelich. The principals shared with the Board the experience that the more than 200 fourth-graders from the District's three elementary buildings had when they were bused to North Royalton Middle School for the fourth annual Spirit Night Tailgate Party. The students enjoyed watching the seventh-grade football team take on Twinsburg, visiting the concession stand and for many, attending an event for the first time at Serpentini Stadium.
Two student representatives from each building shared with the Board what they liked most about Spirit Night.
Royal View Elementary representatives were Ali and Ben Harvanec. Ali Harvanec said, "I liked Spirit Night because I got to hang out with my friends!" Ben Harvanec said, "I liked Spirit Night because it gave me the chance to watch a football game!"
Albion Elementary representatives were Brooklyn Weiss and Naomi Smelcer.
Brooklyn Weiss said, "Spirit Night was one of the most amazing days I have had at Albion Elementary! I am so glad I had the opportunity to participate in this exciting event. When we first got there we went to the middle school gym. We were dancing and talking to our friends. We got to the high school football stadium and watched the game. I loved watching the cheerleaders flip and cheer. Then we were able to go to the concession stand to get snacks. I got a hot pretzel and a slushie. It was so good! Overall, it was such a memorable experience I had with my friends that I will remember forever."
Naomi Smelcer said, "The field trip to the Spirit Night football game was so much fun! I don't normally get to ride with all my classmates, so I enjoyed the bus ride to the stadium. The dance party was a nice surprise for all of us. We even had fun running away from the bees that were attracted to our drinks and food! I had fun watching the football game with my friends, but my favorite thing was watching one of my favorite teachers, Miss Kraus, kick a field goal at half time."
Valley Vista Elementary representatives were Dylan Toro and Taylor Heisler.
Dylan Toro said, "I think the trip to the North Royalton football stadium was fun because it was nice to meet new people from Albion and Royal View. Everybody cheered when the Bears scored a touchdown. It's entertainment and it's a place to make new friends from other schools. Also, I liked it because I'm a football player for the Bears and will be playing there in the future. I look forward to going to the middle school next year."
Taylor Heisler said, "We took a bus over to the game and were able to sit with my classmates and students from Albion and Royal View. I saw my cousin, Emily, because she is on the eighth-grade WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) team. I also saw my babysitter, Ashley, because she was working at the concession stand. I liked seeing all of the fourth-graders from Albion and Royal View, because one day soon, we will all be together at the middle school."
NORTH ROYALTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
Malayah Tucker, a sixth-grade student at North Royalton Middle School, was recognized for her participation in the VFW Patriot Pen essay contest. Her English/language arts teacher Kelly Atkins said, "Malayah is a great writer and always goes above and beyond in the classroom."
A portion of Tucker's essay said, "Many people come to America for better opportunities to be successful. My grandparents were two great examples of those people. They grew up in the Philippines and were very poor. They worked hard and eventually immigrated to America because they knew their hard work would be rewarded, and so their children could have a better life."
NORTH ROYALTON HIGH SCHOOL
Jordan Evanko, Antonella Palmiero and Natalie Rohrer were recognized for their commitment as student athletic aides. "You may have seen them working the sidelines on Friday nights or Saturday mornings helping keep our players taped up, hydrated and generally looked after," said Principal Sean Osborne. "These ladies are responsible for setting up the sideline for each game and all practices. This includes setting up the table and making sure the medical kit and defibrillator are available. Before games they tape ankles, arches and wrists and help players stretch, as well as keep an eye out for rashes and other contagious symptoms. When they have down time, they also help supply some of the other sports teams around campus."
According to Athletic Trainer Maggie Flanagan, "These are three of the hardest working ladies at North Royalton High School. They have good grades, play basketball and work with me six days a week after school. They give up the month of August to help with football two-a-days. When I had to miss work for family reasons, they stepped up and helped the substitute athletic trainer with how things work at North Royalton. It has been a pleasure working with them this year."

Senior Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting Held October 22
The District's Senior Citizen Advisory Committee members met on Tuesday, October 22. They learned about our curriculum and instruction for our students and also received a financial update from Treasurer Biagio Sidoti and a construction update from Superintendent Greg Gurka.

North Royalton High School Seniors Participate in Senior Exit Interview Day
On October 16, approximately 400 seniors at North Royalton High School (NRHS)
participated in Senior Exit Interview Day. This annual event is a requirement for graduation and a culminating activity that Jill Larson, Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Career (CVCC) Specialist, starts freshman year. She assists each student with putting a portfolio together that includes a resume, reference page, cover letter and achievements that have been saved throughout their high school years.
There is no school for underclassman. Each student at NRHS is required to complete a minimum of three post high school career explorations. Suggested exploration activities include job shadowing, college visits, career assessments, community service, career-based field trips and career speaker presentations.
Seniors arrive at school during their designated time and interview with a team of teachers, administrators, CVCC staff and community members. This year, Larson arranged more than 100 interviewers. During the interview, students have an opportunity to showcase his or her high school accomplishments and present a completed portfolio. Students are evaluated on their portfolio, punctuality, appearance, vocal skills, social skills (handshake, eye contact, etc.) and response to questions. This is a life-learning experience and always an enjoyable day for everyone involved.

Seventh Graders Experience Challenge Day
This past month, seventh graders at North Royalton Middle School participated in an inspiring program called Challenge Day. North Royalton City Schools' YETI items Available
at Royalton Ace Hardware
The Royalton Ace Hardware at 14069 Ridge Road is selling customized North Royalton City Schools' YETI drinkware. A portion of the sales will benefit North Royalton High School's Special Teens Activity Club (StAC). StAC is a social club for all students where students volunteer some of their study hall time to help fellow students with special needs. StAC holds after school social events such as attending movies and sporting events as well.
The YETI drinkware sizes include 20-ounce or 30-ounce ramblers, 14-ounce mugs and 18-ounce water bottles. The North Royalton purple is a limited edition color that Ace can only get through the end of the year.
