With an eye toward running his restaurant in as green a manner as possible, Surinder Sroa, owner of the Lotus Family of Restaurant, is introducing a better way to do take-out at Lotus Cuisine of India in San Rafael. He has purchased a full stock of tiffins - round, stainless steel lunchboxes made of stacked and sealed compartments. These are filled with a choice of home-style Indian dishes and can be returned to the restaurant and swapped.

"It's resourceful and cost effective and doesn't ruin the planet or go to landfill," Sroa says. Purchase a two-tiered ($11.95), three-tiered ($14.95) or four-tiered ($19.95) tiffin depending on how many will be served and on your next visit, exchange it with a freshly cleaned and filled box. If you bring your own, get 10 percent off.

AMAZING food. After living in New Delhi with my partner and his grandparents for a few months I needed good, authentic Indian food and have been going here since they opened (I'm a regular and they know my order). After going to Moti Mahal in Delhi where butter chicken was invented, I can confidently say that Lotus does it so well. Their chicken tikka masala is delightful as well. Throughout the last few months though, I became vegetarian, and then vegan, and still love the food. I switched to paneer tikka masala (amazing) as a vegetarian and now the aloo tikka masala as a vegan. Almost all of their dishes can be made vegan too. If you're looking for delicious food (vegan or not!), come here!
