Mask Up! Coronado

The City launched its “Mask Up! Coronado” campaign last month to educate visitors, residents and businesses about the importance of wearing a mask in public. The City held several mask giveaways earlier this month and more free mask giveaways are planned. Local businesses have been offered Mask Up! Coronado window clings to support the City’s message to spread kindness not COVID-19. Finally, Coronado encourages everyone to maintain situational awareness and be courteous. The City wants the community to be safe and to continue to take precautions especially when outdoors.

Public health officials promote masks as the best way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The California Department of Public Health issued guidance last week that cautions that asymptomatic people can still spread the disease. Wearing face coverings is urged because along with social distancing they limit the release of infected droplets when talking, coughing and sneezing.
Grand Caribe
Shoreline Park Closed

The Port of San Diego has closed Grand Caribe Shoreline Park due to the difficulty in enforcing state and county health orders. The Port has posted the entire area with signage that directs the public to not enter the park effective Thursday, Aug. 6, including the parking area directly adjacent to the park. The Port closed the park in late March to help minimize the spread of and exposure to COVID-19 and reopened it in May. The Port is re-closing the park to further discourage non-essential gatherings of any size. The Port, San Diego Harbor Police and the Coronado Police Department will work to educate the public about the closure. The Port’s other parks and facilities in Coronado, the Landing Park and beach and Tidelands Park will remain open.
Commercial Permits for
Outdoor Fitness

Commercial permits for COVID-19-impacted fitness and gym facilities with Coronado brick and mortar locations are now actively using public spaces. City residents will notice these businesses operating at Spreckels Park, Bradley Field, Central Beach, and North Beach, from 7 a.m. to noon in 1.5-hour slots. There are currently four local businesses holding classes in the parks and at the beach. Originally, five businesses applied for, and were issued, extended permits with one relinquishing its spot. All the available bookings at Spreckels Park are taken and one is filled at North Beach.
City Offers Restaurants
Outdoor Seating Options

As of Friday, August 14, the City has worked with 21 local restaurants to offer outdoor seating.

Effective Tuesday, July 7, restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms, and movie theaters, among other businesses, were ordered to close if they operated indoors per the latest San Diego County public health order.

In May, the City agreed to waive Coronado’s parking code requirements to allow local restaurants to temporarily serve dining patrons outdoors due to limits on dine-in services. With the new prohibition on indoor dining, the City is going business to business to help approve temporary outdoor seating.

Restaurants must not exceed their previously approved seating occupancy, pre-COVID, and may offer seating on a sidewalk, within an on-site outdoor space or in a privately-owned parking lot subject to certain conditions and limitations.
Public Comments in the time of COVID-19

The City has worked hard during the ongoing pandemic to make public participation in local government matters as simple as possible. Pursuant to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive orders, the City Council and staff may participate in public meetings via teleconference. In the interest of reducing the spread of COVID-19, no in-person public participation is currently allowed in Coronado. All meetings of the City Council and other boards, commissions and committees are broadcast live on Spectrum Channel 19 and AT&T Channel 99 on the day of the meeting and rebroadcast daily until the next meeting. The meetings can also be streamed live on the City's website. Public comments for all boards, commissions and committees can be made via each group’s page. To submit a public comment, visit the Public Comment page on the City’s website, then:

  1. Select the board, commission or committee you are looking for;
  2. Select the Agendas & Minutes link from the left hand column;
  3. Select Public Comment from the left hand column; and
  4. Scroll down to the actual form, fill it out and hit submit at the bottom.

Please submit your comment no later than 11:00 a.m. on the meeting day to allow for distribution and posting. All written comments will be posted on the City's website in lieu of being read aloud at the meeting. Please note that this form is defined as a public record under the California Public Records Act and is therefore subject to public disclosure upon request. Members of the public may request to provide live public comment via Zoom, however, requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Please contact the City Clerk at (619) 522-7321 or cityclerk@coronado.ca.us for more information.

The Red Cross currently has an urgent need for blood. To date the city has hosted four successful drives. The Tuesday, August 25 blood drive is full but there are appointments available for the September 30 drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nautilus Room. In total, 171 units have been collected from 177 donors (98 first time donors), which can go on to save up to 513 lives.
