A Message from the Principal
Greetings SHHS Families!

It was great to see so many of our parents and families last evening at our annual Open House & Curriculum Night! I hope you found the event informative and left with a deeper understanding of your child's classes. Please be reminded that Monday is Rosh Hashanah and our schools and offices will be closed. Classes resume on Tuesday with a busy week to follow.

Our Student Group on Race Relations (SGORR) tryouts will take place before and immediately after school on Wednesday, September 12, in the Upper Cafeteria. On Wednesday evening, we are hosting Naviance and College Planning meetings for the parents and guardians of 12th-graders. School Counselors will discuss College Planning with their Seniors on Thursday during 3rd period.

On Friday, School Counselors will discuss the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) with Seniors during English classes. Throughout the day on Friday, we will also be hosting our first student Blood Drive of the year in the Egress.

I wish a happy and healthy new year to those observing Rosh Hashanah, and an enjoyable long weekend for all!

A Message from the SHHS PTO Co-Presidents
Hello all!
We want to share two recurring events that are terrific times to learn more about what's going on at SHHS and to connect with other families.

PRINCIPAL CHATS:   Four times each school year, Mr. Kuehlne joins us to talk with parents and get to know one another better. Like any good chat, these include snacks and drinks!  This year we will focus each Principal Chat on a hot topic. The first one is on September 15th at 11:30 am, right before the Football Game in the North Gym and the focus will be athletics.  Please come share your thoughts and questions!

COMMUNITY BUILDERS:  This growing group of SHHS parents, guardians, and grandparents gets together to intentionally and joyfully build "beloved community" - learn more here. You will find SHHS CommUnity Builders hosting Coffee Houses at Conferences on October 15 and 16 and leading the way for the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service.  Meanwhile, people gather throughout the year to talk about tough topics such as racism, social media challenges, restorative practices, sexual harassment and assault, and economic equality.  Then those discussions are put into action with work to remove barriers to inclusion and engagement.  The first gathering is September 20th at 6:30 pm at Lisa Vahey's home (18915 Oxford) and all are welcome!

Be well,
2018-19 SHHS PTO Co-Presidents

Did You Know?
There is a Zen Room at SHHS. It is a quiet, calm place for students who need a soothing space to deal with anxiety and stress. With the guidance of SHHS nurse Paula Damm, students use the room to learn strategies so they can return to class. Within the calm light blue room, there is a couch, a whiteboard for expression, stress-relieving putty, a miniature zen garden, coloring pages, and a guide of strategies that students can use to self soothe. In 2016, four IB diploma students painted and created the Zen Room as their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project
Red Raider Day is Tomorrow!
Join Shaker families and students from all of our schools and watch the Raiders take on the Austintown-Fitch Falcons on Saturday at 1 pm. The Middle School Band will join the High School Marching Band and the Raiderettes for a special halftime show. Come out, wear your Shaker gear and show your Raider Pride!
Start Talking!
When LGBT students feel  welcome and secure at school, they are much more likely to achieve and maintain good mental and physical health. Read  the article from the Ohio Department of Education.
