High blood pressure or abnormal bleeding during pregnancy, as well as complications such as cesarean delivery or preterm birth, may all increase the risk of autism, two new studies suggest1,2. And the more difficulties during pregnancy and delivery, the more severe the autism features in the child, according to one of the studies.

The first study, published in Autism, suggests that siblings of autistic children experience many of the same complications.

"We always investigate prenatal factors in autism and controls, but we do not really look at siblings," says lead investigator Susan Shur-Fen Gau, professor of psychiatry at National Taiwan University. The finding warrants a closer look at how an individual's genetic profile interacts with environmental triggers to shape autism risk, she says. Read on...

A decade ago, Sarah S. Mire helped assess autism symptoms in children who came to Baylor College of Medicine in Texas for a research project. She got to know their families and appreciate the time they devoted to the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC), an autism study that recruited families at university centers throughout the United States and Canada.

Like other families affected by autism,1-3 many of the parents she met experienced higher than average levels of stress. Some, she noticed, seemed to be coping well with every curveball, managing their child's autism symptoms, learning needs, speech or behavioral therapies, and medical appointments. They had a kind of resilience that seemed "unique to families on the spectrum," she recalled recently.

"Parents are such critical figures in the lives of children," she said. She wanted to know more about parents' stress levels and their perceptions of autism, and how these affected the treatment and services their children received. Previous studies have found that parents' perceptions about autism may influence the types of treatments they seek for it.4,5 And stress can affect parents' ability to follow their children's behavior plans or implement autism interventions at home, according to other research. Social Security may have overpaid in excess of $380 million to some 77,000 people receiving Supplemental Security Income, according to a government audit.

A review from the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General estimates that the agency failed to conduct so-called redeterminations for about 1.1 million beneficiaries for longer than 10 years due to budget issues.

As a result, the audit found that many people getting SSI - which serves those with disabilities - may have received benefits they shouldn't have qualified for. Read on...

Disabled people, older adults, and parents of young children all have specific needs that aren't always well addressed in disaster planning-sometimes with horrific results.

After months of criticism, Puerto Rico has finally acknowledged the truth death toll of Hurricane Maria-not less than 100 people, as originally stated, but closer to 1,400, though a Harvard study estimated that over 4,500 "excess deaths" occurred during and shortly after the storm. While many following the inadequate response to the storm are concerned by these numbers, the disability community is particularly worried, because though the government hasn't openly expressed it, many of these very preventable deaths were likely associated with disabilities.

For one thing, almost ten percent of the deaths identified in the Harvard study were associated with "respiratory problems secondary to power outages," notes Marcie Roth, chief executive officer of the Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies. That sounds much like a euphemism for deaths of people with respiratory conditions relying on BiPAP/CPAP, ventilators, nebulizers, and oxygen concentrators, Roth says. The elision of the disability community from conversations about what happened in Puerto Rico, though, is just a small part of a much larger problem. Read on...

Pay: $14 an hour

We are seeking an educational aid for a spirited, loving first grader with ADHD to assist in maintaining attention and focus while completing school assignments. The ideal person would be very firm but kind. The child is currently medicated but still struggles with attention and focus to stay on task. Child also struggles with handwriting so assistance and help with that also required.The person would need to have good people skills and respect the classroom environment, working well with first grade teacher and her assistant with minimal guidance. Aid may be asked to assist with test-taking. The ideal candidate would be available August 22 start date (there is flexibility on this) Experience with spirited kids with ADHD or children with attention/focus and sensory integration issues would be very helpful! (There is some flexibility with hours.)

To help, NFAR established a Program in 2005 that awards funding to educators to support the specialized academic needs of their students with autism. These awards give educators a vehicle for funding technology, social skills training, developing effective communication skills for verbal and non-verbal students, as well as reducing sensory and behavioral issues that interfere with learning.

The 2018/2019 NFAR Teachers' Applications are due September 30th.

• Applications are due by September 30, 2018
• Awards will be announced on February 1, 2019
• Awards range between $2,500 and $10,000
• Proposed project should be a 3 - 12 month effort and start in 2019. (Certain types of projects may extend up to 18 months.)

Video modeling is an evidence based mode of teaching that uses video recording and display to provide a visual model of a targeted behavior or skill. 'An individual watches a video of a targeted behavior and then replicates it.
