This is Us Sermon Series
This Sunday we will kick off a brand new sermon series discovering the DNA of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. This series looks back at what makes VHUMC what it is, both as an extension of the United Methodist Church and as a community of faith in Vestavia Hills. Join us every Sunday in September as we look inward to help us explore who we are as a church.
Church-Wide Assembly
Plan to attend this informative meeting on Sunday, September 16, in Tyson Hall, during the Sunday School hour at 9:45 am. Church leaders will be sharing reports on our progress, ideas for our new strategic plan, a construction update, and our fiscal year-end finances. As always, we will have coffee and time for questions and answers.
Boomer Bible Study
Jim Frazier will be leading Adam Hamilton's video Bible Study: John (The Gospel of Light and Life). We will be meeting in room 147 in the Lighthouse, on Thursday nights, at 6:30 pm, starting tonight, September 6. The study will last seven weeks. For more information contact Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).
Wednesday Evening Class on "Boundaries"
Have ever wondered, "Can I set limits and still be a loving person? How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? or Why do I feel guilty when I consider setting boundaries?" If so, then the book "Boundaries" by Dr. Henry Cloud and John Townsend can help you establish the personal property lines that define who you are and who you are not, and influence all areas of your life. Ellery Berryhill, licensed professional counselor, will lead this faith-based study starting September 12, in room 208, at 6:00 pm.
Mission Mondays
Sometimes the Missions office can get a little crowded with all the items donated, given, collected, or saved for an organization or partnership group. While stepping over toys, diapers, or other collections we try not to lose focus on what we all are accomplishing. The stories, the tears, the requests, the cars, the blankets, the peanut butter sandwiches, all in some way or another will impact someone in the community - and that is what we are called to do as Christians. We are here to make a difference, show Christ's love to everyone, give grace and forgiveness when sometimes it is not deserved, appreciated or even wanted. We almost feel guilty that we get to see God's hands at work in so many ways in everyday acts in the Missions office. We want to share those moments and little miracles with you to show how God is at work in the lives of those around us.

This fall, we hope you will rejoice with us on the Missions Facebook page (Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church Missions and Outreach). We will be posting stories and sharing how God is at work at VHUMC, and how we have witnessed Him and His grace. If you have a story that you would like to share, please email it to Rachael Hayes ([email protected]). We will post on Mondays, so stay tuned for our "Mission Mondays" through stories that will inspire you.
Bill Bostick at Sunday Evening Worship
Come as you are and join us for a joyful evening of worship in the Rutland-Memorial Chapel at 5:00 pm. Our preaching will be led by Bill Bostick, so come sing, pray, and fellowship with us!
Magic City Nutcracker Auditions
Auditions for our 6th annual production of the Magic City Nutcracker will be this Saturday, September 8, at Forma Arts and Wellness. Please go to magicictynutcraker.org for more information.
New Life Singers Start-Up
We invite any and all students, grades 6th-12th, to come join us for the New Life Singers start-up. Our first rehearsal is this Sunday, September 9, at 4:00 pm. The student choir sings a wide range of music from contemporary praise song arrangements to more formal hymns and spiritual music. It is a wonderful support group of friendly well-rounded students who love to give of their time and talents in service to our church and community. For questions or further information contact Quint Harris ([email protected]) or Matthew Wall ([email protected]).
Blood Drive This Sunday
It's not about the needle, it's about the need. VHUMC is hosting a blood drive this Sunday from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Blood donations can be made in the LifeSouth Blood Mobile which will be located in the main VHUMC parking lot. Your gift of a blood donation can help save three lives. Please consider giving the gift of life to others. Contact Ali McGill ([email protected]) for more information or with questions. All donors will receive a recognition item and a free cholesterol screening. Donors must be 16 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have a photo ID.
Elementary Bible Study
We invite 1st-5th graders to join us for our elementary Bible Study, Bible Pathfinders, on Wednesday nights during the school year from 6:00-7:00 pm in rooms 219/221! We will kick off on September 12 and take a journey around the world to learn about Paul's Missionary Journeys, about kids in different countries, and explore what it means to be a missionary for Jesus. We will have lots of fun with music, skits, discussion, games and more! Contact Jamie Meeks ([email protected]) for more information.
Car Ministry Donations Increasing
The donations of cars, trucks, and other vehicles continues to increase in the VHUMC Car ministry. You have all blessed this ministry and the applicants in ways that you cannot even imagine. Lives have been changed and family dynamics transformed because of your generosity, so thank you!

If you would like to learn more about the car ministry, donate a car, or volunteer, please feel free to contact the mission's office or talk to one of our team members. Please also thank our team members for their constant dedication and service to this ministry: Ashley Curry (Team Leader), Dan Langford, David Harwell, Don Harwell, Don Hire, Rick Dunphy, Charles Murrell, Jim Miller, Judy Meyer, Amy Young, and Jim Frazier.
Whale of a Sale Volunteers Needed
Vestavia Day School is one of the strongest outreach ministries of the church and they need our help. The Whale of a Sale, the school's only fundraiser, is coming up and in need of volunteers. This is a great opportunity for you, your friends or your Sunday School group to serve our church and community. Please check your calendars and see if you have a few hours free on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, September 12, 13 or 14. Sign up and enjoy sorting and organizing clothing and toys for the sale. Plus, all volunteers get an early shopping pass at 1:30 pm on Thursday, September 13, before the sale opens to the public! If you don't have time to spare, please also consider donating a treat to the hospitality room! If you are interested in helping, email us ([email protected]) or visit the link below and select a time and day that works for you!

Fidget Mats - A Great New Ministry
Thank you so much for the outpouring of support for the Fidget Ministry in the way of resources! We have now shared 220 activity mats with individuals who suffer from Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and who are on hospice. We have also shared with several hospice groups and retirement homes. The mats are a result of the donated materials and hard-working fidget angels!

If you would like a personalized mat, please gather items that might share something about that person's life story (i.e. Auburn key chain, glove, piece of fabric from a favorite dress, belt, scarf) and that person's name and your contact info.

Please continue to donate placemats and objects that might be sewn on the mats. If you know, or have a loved one, who might benefit from a fidget mat, please contact Peggy Patton ([email protected] / 982-5997). Many thanks for your support of time, talent, and resources!
Blessing of the Pets
Our pets are a blessing to us, join us in blessing them. Bring those special pets to the north lawn of the church so they can receive a special blessing from our clergy on Saturday, October 6, at 10:00 am. Make sure to circle the date on your calendar! Also, if you would like to volunteer to help with this special service, please contact Peyton Chandler [email protected] / 769-0119) or Butch Williams ([email protected] / 769-0102).
Middle School Retreat
We are so excited to announce a new location for our Middle School Retreat! We will be spending the weekend at Timberlake Ministries in Millport, AL. Register now through October 2. Late registration will continue through October 11 with a 10% late fee with no guarantee of a t-shirt. After October 11, we will only be able to add students to a wait list. No exceptions, so register early! There is a sibling discount of 50% off the registration price! Enter promo code: "siblingdiscount" when registering your students.

We also need chaperones! This is a first come, first serve basis so please let us know asap if you would like to chaperone by emailing Juli Hansen ([email protected]).

Seniors Only 2019
Seniors Only has begun, but you can still be a part! Join us for this monthly meeting to help prepare our senior students for college. Seniors will meet in the Student Ministries Cafe on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm. The next meeting is October 2. The cost is $50 and includes dinner and materials.

Welcome New Members
Please welcome Roy and Margaret Crow back to Vestavia Hills and back to VHUMC. They've been gone a while, so we're happy to have them back. They attend the 11:00 traditional service and have already joined the Covenant Sunday School class, so please welcome them when you see them.
Sound System Volunteers
We are looking for sound system volunteers for all of our Sunday services, as well as special services throughout the week. A good sounding service is crucial to making a memorable worship experience. Many weeks we risk having services with no one behind the sound board so we need your help more than ever. With the improvements we are making to all of our worship spaces we want to make sure we are good stewards of our progress and have volunteers we can call on to make our sound systems run well. It is very easy, and does not require any experience whatsoever. If you want to be a part of this wonderful team them please contact Peyton Chandler ([email protected]).
Brian Davis to Speak at VHUMC Prayer Breakfast
Brian Davis, the director of Public Works for the City of Vestavia and an SEC Football line judge, will be our guest speaker on Wednesday, September 19, at 6:45 am, in the Fellowship Hall. Brian has worked for the city of Vestavia Hills for 17 years. In 2012, he was named the city's public services director. Because he attended the University of Alabama, Brian cannot officiate Crimson Tide games. Men, women, and students are all welcome to attend this special breakfast. The cost is $5. Please RSVP by contacting Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).
2019 Jesus Trail Hike Informational Meeting
Join Jim Frazier on Sunday, September 23, at 4:00 pm, in room 316 for videos and information about the exciting Jesus Trail Hike coming up April 2-10, 2019. This will be a once in a lifetime trip as you leisurely hike around the Sea of Galilee, spend a day in old Jerusalem, and another day in Bethlehem and the Jordan River. Space is limited. For more information contact Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).

Music and Arts
Now that School is back in session, so is the VHUMC Music and Arts program. Music and Arts is for all children K-5th grade and every Wednesday from 2:30-5:00 pm, when Vestavia Schools are in session. Children will have the opportunity to be creative in sessions such as Choir, Hand Bells, Drama, Visual Arts, Drumming, and Orff instruments. We offer transportation from Vestavia East, West, Central, and the Vestavia Day School. We also need several helpers! If you would like to volunteer to be a van driver, a shepherd (lead children between sessions), or if you have any questions about Music and Arts; please contact Matt Wall ([email protected]). We hope to see your child with us when we kick off on September 5.

September Memory Verse
Our Elementary Bible Verse memorization program is beginning again! Our 1st - 5th graders will be taught a different verse each month, and have the opportunity to recite the verse before or after Sunday School in the elementary office for a sweet treat! September's memory verse is: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." - Hebrews 13:8

At the end of the school year we will give a grand prize to one boy and one girl. We hope that these verses help to guide them throughout their lives. Parents, you should have received an email with more information. If you have any questions please contact Jamie Meeks ([email protected]).
Conservatory Transport Volunteers Needed
The Conservatory of the Arts is in need of a few volunteers willing to offer their service in transporting children to and from lessons. Our children's safety is so important and what a blessing it is to assist in the broadening of the human spirit through the Arts. If you are interested in helping out in this ministry please contact Matthew Wall ([email protected]). Thank you!
New Joe Elmore Title Available
"JESUS" is the title of a book that seeks to answer the question Jesus asked: "Who do you say I am?" Written by Joe Elmore, the book is available in the front office and from Margaret Flowers. There is no charge. A gift to the "VHUMC Grace Fund" is requested.
Hannah Prayer Team
The Hannah Prayer Team continues to pray for expectant moms and their babies. We have six babies due this fall. Please contact Ty Howell ([email protected] / 529-1262) if you are expecting and would like us to add you and your baby to our prayer list.
Growing Pains: Renovating for Our Future
Please continue to pardon our mess as work continues for our HVAC and cosmetic upgrades in the Sanctuary and Narthex. Work is almost complete on our new chiller for those areas and we will have air conditioning this Sunday!

During the installation of our new transformer, wires were accidentally cut to the west parking lot lights. They will be restored soon, but please be extra careful in the meantime.

It is exciting to see our new Sanctuary speakers installed and progress made on our new organ screen. Work is almost finished in the Narthex and our Sanctuary side aisles. We hope to have everything complete and cleaned up by mid-October.
Ongoing Outreach
Tutors Needed
It is that time of year when our tutor volunteers are gearing up for a new school year with a whole new group of students ready to learn. If you have a desire to help a young student exceed their potential or love working with young children, then this ministry might be for you. VHUMC partners with two great organizations in the Birmingham community to provide one on one tutoring. If you feel this is where God is calling you to serve, please contact Rachael Hayes ([email protected]) in the Missions office and she will put you in contact with the team leader for the site of your choice.

Food Pantry
The Food Pantry needs spaghetti sauce and Ziploc sandwich bags. We are always in need of the plastic grocery bags, preferably doubled and flat.

We are still trying to help a family that lost their house in a fire to find two queen size beds with mattresses. If you can help contact Barbara Porter ([email protected] / 444-9793).

Harvest of Hope Luncheon
The twelfth Annual Harvest of Hope Luncheon will be held next Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at The Club. A silent auction will begin at 10:00 am.

Founded in 2001, Oak Mountain Mission Ministries provides food, clothing, furniture, and financial assistance to those in need in the Greater Birmingham area. Individuals are referred to the Mission from domestic violence and homeless shelters, faith support churches, and social service agencies. Everything is given to screened, qualified clients at no charge. This past year, OMM assisted 6,120 families and the needs continue to grow.

To reserve a place at one of our VHUMC tables, please contact Barbara Porter (444-9793 or [email protected]).
