Happy Holidays from the  Chicago Metro Metal Consortium (CMMC) ! As 2018 draws to a close, we want to share a quick recap of some of the work we accomplished this year. CMMC focused on:

CMISP business networking
Supporting Metro Chicago Manufacturers by:
  • Providing backbone support to the Calumet Manufacturing Industry Sector Partnership (CMISP) which works to enhance the competitiveness of metal, machinery, and equipment manufacturers in the Calumet region.
  • Engaging over 30 manufacturers, organizing 12 events and leveraging over $500,000 in additional funds to support workforce training, designed to introduce new technologies, increase sales for businesses and strengthen relationships between local schools and manufacturers in the Calumet region.
  • Launching the Chicago Defense Industry Program to enhance the competitiveness of the defense supply chain with a $200,000 grant from the Department of Defense.
  • Promoting apprenticeships across the region, including the German American Chamber of Commerce's ICATT program and Prairie State College.
  • Hosting Cybersecurity Training at DMDII for manufacturers seeking compliance with US Department of Defense requirements.
Manufacturing Day 2018
Promoting Careers in Manufacturing by:
  • Encouraging MFG Day participation for 75+ manufacturers in about 65 events (an 18% increase over 2017), exposing over 1,500 high school students to manufacturing careers and tours of facilities.
  • Supporting training programs like Opportunity Works which has served over 600 people, connecting over 80% to education and paid internships, and Manufacturing Connect, which places young people in internships and jobs at local manufacturers throughout the year.
Taste of Manufacturing Tour for Local High School Leaders
  • Connecting schools and manufacturers, through the Calumet Manufacturing Industry Sector Partnership (CMISP), we hosted two job fairs and a manufacturing tour for local high school students, counselors, school leaders and manufacturers.
Championing the Chicago Region as a Manufacturing Powerhouse by:
  • Tweeting to support #manufacturing 65+ times, picking up 45% more followers than last year.
  • Increasing support of manufacturing programs across Cook County through federal grant programs.
  • Supporting the transatlantic cluster initiative with Germany delegation on Industry 4.0 along with the German American Chamber of Commerce, University of Illinois, and mHUB, facilitating a peer exchange with the German delegation in Chicago, and sending a delegation to Germany.
  • Participating in the annual summit of manufacturing communities across the country in Washington DC.
  • Attending the Department of Defense national convening to share and learn from best practices related to Defense on behalf of the Illinois Defense Network.
Over the last year CMMC developed new partnerships, met with new manufacturers, and continued to promote the Chicago region as a global manufacturing powerhouse. We look forward to continuing our efforts in 2019, especially as we move to serve as a regional navigator for apprenticeships and develop the Chicago Region Defense Program  further.

Please be on the lookout for updates, upcoming events, and opportunities in our next newsletter!

All the best,
