Senior Spends Summer on Mission Trip

Senior Aidan Blanchard spent her summer in Jamaica on a mission trip.

"My summers are filled with love, compassion, and the need to serve," said Blanchard. "This summer, my calling was to help the poorest of the poor and the sickest of the sick in Kingston, Jamaica. The Missionaries of the Poor afforded me the opportunity to assist with the daily needs and taking care of those who have absolutely no way to care for themselves.

She said that it was a humbling experience and that she plans on taking another trip. "I am not sure where my next mission trip will take me, but I am certain it will be where God feels I am needed most."

Stadium Grand Opening

The new Harvey Peltier Memorial Stadium ribbon cutting and dedication was held September 13 at 6:00 p.m.  Last year, the stadium received a massive renovation. The old home grandstands were torn down and replaced with a new two-thousand seat grandstand and enlarged press box. In addition, new bathroom facilities were constructed underneath the stadium. The renovations were ready for the first home football game against St. James on September 14. At the special dedication, Bishop Shelton J. Fabre blessed the new stadium, followed by tours of the new facility.

Press Box Dedication

The Press Box Dedication to Pat Szush was held September 14 before the EDW vs. St. James game.

Szush's coaching career began at Thibodaux High. He made stops at Thibodaux College and Thibodaux Central Catholic, which eventually became E. D. White Catholic High School in 1966. His stellar career included an overall record of 79-31-3. In ten years at E. D. White, he led the Cardinals to five district championships ('66, '67, '68, '69, and '72) and two consecutive state championships in 1968 and 1969. He had undefeated regular seasons in 1966 and 1968. His 1968 season was E. D. White's only undefeated season in the history of E. D. White football going 11-0-1 and ending with the school's first state championship. His teams were state semifinalists in 1967, '70, and '72. In all, he had seven state playoff appearances. For his efforts, Szush was named district coach of the year in 1966, '67, '68, and '69 and again in 1972. He was Louisiana's Class A state coach of the year in 1966 and '68. From 1966 through 1969, E. D. White amassed a record of 42-6-4 for an 81% winning percentage. Of the 52 games in that time, 24 of the games were shutout wins.

1968 State Champs Reunion

The 1968 State Championship football team celebrated the 50-year anniversary with a reunion on September 14.

Moving into the 1968 season fifty years ago, the Cardinal football team was coming off an appearance in the 1967 semi-finals in the Louisiana Class A football championship. The Cardinals got off to a good start in 1968 by posting a 7-7 tie with Central Lafourche in the Thibodaux Jamboree. Central Lafourche went all the way to the State AA finals that year. In 1968 the Cardinals posted an 11-0-1 record, E. D. White's only undefeated season.   The cumulative scoring that year was E.D. White 367 and our opponents 51. The Cardinals shut out 4 opponents that year with 2 being in the playoffs culminating with a 28-0 victory over Homer on December 6, 1968. This brought the first football state championship to E. D. White and the first to the Thibodaux area.

Coaches were Duncan Crawford, Edmond Gros, Lance Poimbouef and Head Coach Pat Szush. Members of the 1968 team were David Autin, Barry Aysen, Joe Fakier, Robert Gros, Donald Peltier, Robert Bell, Richard Borne, Paul Bouterie, Lee Domangue, Laury Dupont, Marcel Fournet, Calvin Gaudet, Jerry Gaudet, Harley Gros, Tommy Gros, John Martin, Earl Melancon, Charles Morgan, Jim Morvant, Nathan Musso, Robert Olivier, Donald Peltier, Ronnie Peltier, Mike Pereira, Mike Prejeant, Al Robichaux, Glenn Rodrigue, Lea Rutter, Harold Sonnier, Terry Szush, Byron Talbot, Steve Tate, Eustis Thibodaux, Nathan Thornton, Cecil Trosclair, Mark Verret and Chester Weimer.
