Early Literacy is Not Just Reading

Early language and literacy (reading and writing) development begins in the first three years of life. During this stage, early literacy is not about early reading, instead it is more about developing children's enjoyment and interest in books and stories. Adults/caregivers, through their daily interactions with young children, can be the building blocks for language, reading and writing development.

Here are a few activities that you can do to support early language and literacy:
  • Have books accessible
  • Encourage children to explore and play with books
  • Sing nursery rhymes or the alphabet
  • Read stories and involve children
  • Use a variety of words and/or vocabulary
  • Repeat what children say or sounds they make
