The Pegasus Project Newsletter
SEPTEMBER 2018

YOUR GIFT MATTERS!

The Pegasus Project is changing lives every day for horses and humans by fulfilling our mission to rescue and rehome neglected animals. We completely depend upon your continued generosity to keep the operation going. To assist in our fundraising goals, Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) is sponsoring North Texas Giving Day on Thursday, September 20th.

Members of the Pegasus board of directors and other generous donors are providing matching funds for gifts made in connection with North Texas Giving Day. Our Matching Donors will match EVERY gift made on September 20th dollar-for-dollar up to  $32,000!

In addition, The Pegasus Project will receive extra bonus funds from CFT for each donation of $25 or more made on Thursday, September 20th. More than $2 million in bonus funds are available for qualifying nonprofits! (Gifts of less than $25 are welcome and appreciated but not eligible for CFT bonus funds.)

With the bonus funds from CFT and our core supporters' 1:1 matching funds, donations totaling $32,000 will turn into more then $64,000! So, please mark your calendar for September 20th, save your pennies, and plan to donate generously!

Also, every donation made to Pegasus through the North Texas Giving Day website on September 20th helps our chances of winning additional money. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day ranging from $500 - $10,000! With more than 75 total prizes being awarded, our chances to maximize your gift are great.

By visiting the North Texas Giving Day Pegasus link between 6am and midnight (Central Time) on September 20th and donating $25 or more, you will make a tremendous impact on the work Pegasus can do. You can give securely from your computer, smart phone or mobile device. With your help, we WILL reach our  $80,000 fundraising goal  on North Texas Giving Day! These funds will go directly to the care, support and training of the forty rescued equine currently residing at the Pegasus ranch.

Want to schedule your donation early? No problem! Beginning at 8am on September 10th and continuing through midnight on September 19th, donors can log on to the Pegasus link on the North Texas Giving Day website and schedule their gifts to The Pegasus Project, which will then be processed on September 20th.

Please join us at The Forge in Ben Wheeler, starting at 5:30pm on September 20th. We will host a Pegasus Partner Happy Hour with drink specials and a donation station available to help you make your gift to the horses. When you leave, give us a copy of your receipt, and The Forge will donate your entire purchase back to The Pegasus Project!

~CASSIDY~
A Beauty Returns to Pegasus

Cassidy upon her return to Pegasus - August 2018

In June 2011 we rescued a herd of nine horses in Jacksonville, Texas, which included several pregnant mares. On July 11, 2011, one of those mares, Reese, gave birth to an adorable foal we named Audrey. Handled since birth, Audrey was always confident and charming, just like her daddy Sundance, a Pegasus favorite. We watched her grow up and began her saddle training in the fall of 2013.  Audrey took everything in stride!  She proved to be a smart filly and a quick learner, and she quickly progressed into a confident trail horse.

Audrey was spotted online by Ann Netzow of Vail, Colorado. Ann traveled to Texas, met Audrey, spent a couple of days riding her and decided she had to have her. In July 2014, Audrey moved to Colorado where Ann continued her training and development under the watchful eye of Ann's instructors Mark Rashid and Crissi McDonald. We could not have asked for a better future for our dear sweet girl.  Ann changed Audrey's name to Cassidy (as in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid") as a tip of the hat to her daddy! In 2016, Ann moved with Cassidy to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she remained until the summer of 2018. We consistently received glowing reports from Ann that Cassidy was indeed her dream horse and was everything she had always wanted.

In late July 2018, Ann made contact to inform us that she had developed a serious illness and could no longer care for or ride Cassidy. With a broken heart, she reported that she needed to return Cassidy to Pegasus. We were very sad for Ann but were happy to fulfill our commitment to ensure Cassidy's safety for life. On August 13th, Cassidy was delivered to the Pegasus ranch by Equine Express. When a tall, mature, gorgeous horse stepped off the trailer, we were in love once again. Ann had done a fantastic job with Cassidy, and she returned ready for her chance at another dream home. We gave her a couple of days to rest and acclimate, and then Anthony started working with Cassidy. She's fantastic!! This beautiful 7 year old mare is ready for her next adventure. If you are looking for a confident, people-oriented horse who is versatile and talented enough to learn most any discipline, Cassidy may be your girl!

Side note: The Pegasus Project commits to every horse for life. Our adoption contract provides that when you adopt a horse from Pegasus, you may never sell, trade or give the horse away. If you cannot keep the horse for the remainder of its life, you must return the horse to us or we must approve the next adopter and that adopter must enter into our adoption contract. We firmly believe that every horse is just one owner away from being put at risk. We are proud of our safety-for-life guarantee and never want a Pegasus horse to end up back in the system. We screen our adopters carefully, and they are grateful for this safety net for their beloved animals. Our hearts go out to Ann, but it makes us happy to provide comfort to her by ensuring Cassidy's future.

 A Word About
Bruce Logan

I met Bruce Logan in person for the first time in 2005 when I took my horse, Gaits, to him for training. Long before that day, I had admired Bruce from afar as a young superstar with the Parelli program. When Gaits turned 5 years old, he began to give me a bit of trouble, and Christi Rains, a talented Parelli professional with whom I studied, told me that Bruce was the guy to help Gaits and me. Boy, was she right! Bruce's work with Gaits was the beginning of a long and very special relationship between Bruce and me and my horses.

Over the years, Bruce helped Mike and me with a number of our horses, and as an attorney, I helped him with a number of legal issues and contracts . Our trust, friendship and admiration for each other grew, and by the time The Pegasus Project was born, it was inevitable that Bruce would play a major role in its development. He has served as a guiding light for our training program and a wise mentor to help us navigate through challenging times.

Bruce's talent with horses is undeniable. He's the best colt starter I've ever seen. But most importantly, he understands horses better than anyone around. He strives to see things from the horse's perspective and to build the horse's confidence through communication the horse can understand. He can occasionally be impatient with people (humans can be infuriating in our ignorance), but he's NEVER impatient with a horse. By providing consistency and fairness, he builds trust and develops the horse's talents without force, fear or intimidation.

Bruce has helped us with many Pegasus horses over the years. We have taken in horses that other trainers write off as "untrainable" to have Bruce develop them into safe partners for average riders. He looks at a horse and sees its potential and give the horse the time necessary to develop trust and begin learning. When Bruce heard about the ultra-challenging Phoenix Herd, he stepped up and offered to take the entire group of feral horses to his ranch to get them manageable before bringing them to the Pegasus ranch. We would have been overwhelmed and outmatched without his talents and assistance.

Currently, Bruce serves as an advisor to the Pegasus board of directors. He fills the important role of not only developing many of our horses but of training our trainers. Bruce is a mentor to our entire staff and shares his extensive knowledge of horsemanship with our young, talented trainers.

We are fortunate that Bruce continues sharing his vast knowledge with the Pegasus staff, as well as all interested horse enthusiasts. He conducts horsemanship clinics at the Pegasus ranch four times per year. He also welcomes riders to his cattle ranch in Loving, Texas twice per year for instruction and experience in general cow/ranch/cutting work. If you are interested in learning from one of the great masters, don't miss your chance to ride with Bruce. His remaining 2018 clinics at the Pegasus ranch are in September and November, and his cow working clinic in Loving is in October. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in participating in any of these clinics.

In addition to helping all of us at Pegasus, Bruce has been a mentor to many aspiring horsemen in the course of his career. Pick up Tik Maynard's recent book, "In The Middle Are The Horsemen," for Tik's accounting of his inspirational journey to truly understand horses. Tik credits Bruce with teaching him more about horses in a few short months than he had learned about horses in the course of his lifetime. It's a great read!

While we are very  appreciative of  one-time donations, the monthly donations of our Pegasus Partners   allow us to plan ahead.

Our ability to save these helpless horses, donkeys and mules depends on YOUR donations!

We cannot do this without you! Please consider making a monthly donation so we may continue to rescue horses that have no future without us.
