Women's Waistline May
Impact Breast Cancer Risk
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist
Many women focus on the scales to monitor weight change, but it may be more important to pay attention to skirt and pant size, in other words, waistline measurements.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Medicine reported an association between abdominal fat and breast cancer risk. The researchers found that women between the ages of 25 and 60 who increased their skirt size every decade (for example going from a size 8 to a size 10) increased the risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer by 33%.

According to the National Cancer Institute, obesity is linked with increased risk for developing several types of cancers, including postmenopausal breast cancer. However, this study is thought to be the first research that examines the impact that weight gain over time has on this specific cancer group.

Thus, reducing overall body fat not only reduces risk factors for cancer but also reduces the risk for developing cardiovascular disease, still the number one cause of death for women.

The following is a statement from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health:

“… Weight gain during adult life, most often from about age 18 to between the ages of 50 and 60, has been consistently associated with risk of breast cancer after menopause.

The increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer is thought to be due to increased levels of estrogen in obese women. After menopause, when the ovaries stop producing hormones, fat tissue becomes the most important source of estrogen. Because obese women have more fat tissue, their estrogen levels are higher, potentially leading to more rapid growth of estrogen-responsive breast tumors.

Women should monitor waistline measurements starting in their 20’s, in addition to monitoring overall weight gain, throughout their lives. Best ways to keep belly fat at bay? Besides dietary modifications, engage in a combination of cardiovascular and weight training.

Guide to Yoga Styles at Liberty

Core & Power
A yoga-based workout. Familiar poses will be used in this physical class with transitions focused on the co re . The use of light weights and physical phrase repetition may be used to increase intensity. Participants should be prepared to perform various styles of plank and pushups. Yoga skills or background knowledge is helpful, but not required.

Hatha
The lighter side of flow yoga . Hatha, the word, simply means the physical practice of yoga. Hatha, the class, commonly refers to a style that has less of a flow and is not as “tough” as Vinyasa. There are seldom arm balances, inversions or complicated binds in Hatha, but poses may be held for a longer period. Ideal for those looking to develop mental clarity while working on balance, stretch and strength or athletes seeking a practice easier on the shoulder. The slower pace may be used as an introduction to Vinyasa.
Reset and Restore
Undo all that you do. Restorative yoga is all about healing the mind and body through simple poses with the help of props such as blocks, blankets, and straps. Focus on relaxing and releasing to restore balance to our bodies. A great style that anyone can enjoy.

Vinyasa flow
Quick flowing transitions with a strength focus. Teachers lead classes that flow from one pose to another to create the feeling of a more intense workout. Breath and flow are linked together, and you may find more challenging progressions such as binds, arm balances or inversions. Knowledge of basic poses is desired, but not required. Ideal as a method of cross training for all types of athletes.

Yin
No flow. Stretch. Yin yoga focuses on passive, seated or fully reclined postures that target the connective tissues in the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Poses are held for anywhere between one and 10 minutes. Yin can also be a bridge to basic meditation for those hoping to achieve stillness and is ideal for athletic types who need to release tension in overworked joints.

Yogalatte
Yoga with a side of Pilates. If you like to mix it up a little, this is a yoga class mixed with mat Pilates.
