Madison Region Weather Events & Recovery
As your are undoubtedly aware, the Madison Region has experienced a series of weather events comprised of torrential rain, flash flooding, high winds and tornadoes. They caused damage to our infrastructure, businesses, homes and, most tragically, resulted in loss of life. The Region, as well as the State of Wisconsin, continues to be in a state of emergency and under flood watches/warnings.
As the Region's economic development organization, we are coordinating with county and municipal partners to assess and quantify the damage to our Region and are asking you for your help. MadREP has launched a
survey to ascertain how these events have impacted the business community and we are deploying that survey to expand our database throughout the region.

Phoenix To Open First Commercial Neutron Imaging Services Facility Without A Nuclear Reactor
Phoenix LLC, known for making the strongest compact neutron generators in the world, announced plans to build a state-of-the-art neutron imaging center in Fitchburg, WI opening in mid 2019. This will be the first non-reactor facility offering commercial neutron imaging services.
"Opening the Phoenix Neutron Imaging Center represents a major advance in making our neutron imaging technology broadly available to any industry," says Evan Sengbusch, Phoenix President. "By investing in a high performance, reliable, and safe imaging services facility, we're able to tap into new markets that, due to cost, were previously inaccessible."
The Madison-based technology company partnered with Krupp General Contractors, known for sustainable building practices, and the city of Fitchburg to build the 10,000 square foot neutron imaging services facility that will provide neutron activation analysis, radiation effects testing and neutron ("n-ray") and even standard x-ray imaging. The selection process for the new site was done in coordination with local government and economic partner, Madison Region Economic Partnership. "Phoenix's commitment to continue to grow their business in Fitchburg represents another step forward for the Madison Region as a midwestern biotech hub," said MadREP President Paul Jadin. "MadREP is proud to have been a part of the collaboration between local government and business on the site selection."

Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce hosts MadREP
On Monday, Aug.13 the Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a presentation by the Madison Region Economic Partnership (MadREP). The free event at the Amundson Community Center was attended by local government and business representatives.
MadREP President Paul Jadin and Gene Dalhoff , vice president of Talent and Education, provided an overview of the ways they could help spur economic development in Cambridge.

Epic Systems meeting addresses doctor notes, opioids, smoking cessation
UW Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter soon will do what some other Epic medical record customers have done: let patients see doctor notes summarizing their visits.
As a national movement called OpenNotes continues to catch on, health systems are using Epic software to make doctor notes available to patients online, even though some doctors are skeptical of the idea, a doctor said Tuesday at Epic Systems Corp.'s annual users group meeting in Verona.

Medical College of Wisconsin researcher, Exact Sciences CEO recognized by BioForward
A Medical College of Wisconsin cardiovascular researcher and the chief executive officer of Madison-based Exact Sciences Corp. will receive this year's Wisconsin Biohealth Awards for their contributions to the state's biohealth industry.
Allen Cowley, a professor and chair of the department of physiology at MCW, is receiving the Hector F. DeLuca Scientific Achievement Award. Kevin Conroy, chairman and CEO of Exact Sciences, is receiving the Wisconsin Biohealth Business Achievement Award.

Madison Funds Study of Wholesale Market Targeting Small, Local Food Producers
Madison is flush with farmers' markets, community gardens, community supported agriculture and unique projects liked FEED Kitchens. But some believe the lack of a wholesale market puts local food retailers at a disadvantage.
A majority of Madison's local food production operates on a smaller scale, either through personal production of food or directly from the producer to the consumer, like farmers' markets, according to Lindsey Day Farnsworth, a postdoctoral fellow for the UW Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems.
Information Technology:
STEM fields "wasting an awful lot of top talent"
Jo Handelsman, director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, says "we are wasting an awful lot of top talent" in STEM fields by overlooking many candidates who aren't white men.
"We know that only about a third -- 32 percent -- of college grads are white men, and we disproportionately draw our STEM workforce from that very small community of people," she said yesterday at a luncheon organized by the Wisconsin Technology Council.
Advanced Manufacturing:
Foxconn pledges $100 million for UW-Madison research partnership
Foxconn Technology Group has pledged to invest $100 million in UW-Madison to further engineering research and create a new tech facility on the university's campus.
The deal, unveiled at a joint news conference yesterday morning in Madison, includes plans to set up the Foxconn Institute for Research in Science and Technology, in addition to a new research facility that would feature labs and student learning spaces for UW-Madison's College of Engineering.
