Farm Notes: Apricots
This week we enjoy a few delicious apricots in the fruit share. This is amazing since it has been three years since we have had an apricot harvest. The winter weather in recent years has been particularly cold. These frigid temperatures have virtually eliminated the apricot blossoms before they even had a chance to open. We only have a handful of trees and we planted another handful a couple of years ago.
Now I am wondering if we should plant several rows of apricots. Will global warming cause more extreme weather events like frigid winter temperatures? With future weather in mind how often will we expect an apricot harvest? Once every other year? Once every third year? Yet since they are ready just before the peaches and plums, and they are so delicious, I think it is worth the effort of planting more of this golden fruit.
To fruitful harvests,
Farmer Dave
