COMMUNITY NEWS
Dr. Angela Bowen Memorial Service
Sadly, our community has lost one of the great ones. Dr. Angela Bowen devoted her life to changing lives through arts, activism, and scholarship in Connecticut, Boston, and Long Beach.  Born in Boston, she became a professional classical dancer, then used dance, music, and black culture and history to inspire an entire city, and untold numbers of children, in New Haven at The Bowen Peters School of Dance and Cultural Arts Center (1963-1982). Bowen became an outspoken Black Lesbian Feminist writer, author, and organizer, both nationally and internationally. She co-chaired the National Coalition for Black Lesbians and Gays for several years, editing their magazine Black-Out.

Dr. Bowen received the first PhD in Women's Studies from Clark University and taught at CSULB from 1996-2009 where she touched the lives of countless students, inspiring a generation of CSULB activists to understand and fight racism, sexism, and homophobia, and to dream big.

Bowen's family, friends and colleagues will celebrate her life at a memorial service on September 22nd at 1PM at the Anatol Center at California State University, Long Beach.
