   Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost
September 9, 2018

Our Core Values:
Spiritual Growth. Welcome. Justice-seeking

Join us for a tour of our building after worship on Sunday, led by long-time Chairperson of our Building Ministry Jeff Tyler.
Reflection for Worship. . .

Mark 7:24-37
"Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight."
-Albert Schweitzer

Our Bible reading for this Sunday consists of two stories of Jesus healing others. The healings are not the surprise, but rather the boundaries Jesus crosses to do the healings is the surprise. Reaching out to pagans, talking to women in public, caring about those outside of one's "tribe" are all things that Jesus models for us in these stories. Jesus urges us to consider the place of outsiders in our lives - who is in the circle of care that we tend to; who is not? We will consider these circles and our calling to be healers in our worship on Sunday. We will also welcome back our adult choir who have been on Summer hiatus. We hope you will join us!

After worship long-term member Jeff Tyler will be leading a tour of the building for those who want to come along and hear stories and see some of the nooks and crannies of this grand building.

-Rev. Marlene W. Pomeroy

Also this weekend-

Celebration of FCC from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday
150 of you have RSVP'd to attend our grand celebration this Saturday of our ministry in Pasadena since 1885. We will gather in our sanctuary to hear: an array of beautiful music by various musicians and singers, several folks who will share reflections on what attracted them to our church as well as their hopes for our future, and a slide show of vintage and recent photos. After the program we will head to our parlors where dinner will be served! Folks will have a chance to mingle and catch up, see further photos, and take a picture at our photo booth. Many thanks to our event Planning Committee who have worked hard to make this a wonderful evening for us (Randy VanDeventer, Meagan VanDeventer, Kim Story, Dana Pell, Mary Camacho, Lu Burd, Roberta White, Carolyn Olney, Music Director Connie Washburn and Pastor Marlene Pomeroy). Several other folks and staff have also pitched in to help out - Nina in the office, Sallie our building manager, Bonnie Hughes, and Claire Richardson. Many thanks in advance to each of you for your dedication to making this a wonderful event.

Some details for you to know:
As always, we have limited parking on Saturday - you WILL be able to park in the small Walnut lot and the Fuller overhang just adjacent to the small lot. Those spaces are limited so if you are able to walk further, please park in the Fuller Psychology Building (enter on Madison). You may identify yourself as attending the FCC Celebration as we will be paying per car parked. There is NO parking in the University lot or the Los Robles lot. Parking attendants will be outside to assist you. Please plan to carpool on Saturday.

The weather forecast is for the upper 90's so bring something to fan yourself with and dress lightly as we do not have air conditioning in our sanctuary. Our parlors should be a bit cooler. The church nursery will be open but not staffed on Saturday if your little one needs a respite from the festivities. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

September 8th Celebration Update

Thanks to all 149 adults and children who have signed up to join us for our celebration of our ministry and history on September 8th. The deadline for RSVPs was Sunday August 25th.

Here are some notes from the music planned for that evening from our Music Director Connie Washburn:

In addition to hearing the music of our own choir and regular guest singers, our concert will include music with some of our favorite instrumentalists.  Come and hear: Andrew Whitenack on organ, Randy VanDeventer on guitar/vocals, Damon Zick on sax, Cathy Biagini on cello, Lijiljana Lukic on flute, and April Cap on cello. Please come and help us celebrate!

And here are some excerpts compiled by Roberta White from the book, "Kept by Grace," written on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of our church:

"Wednesday night May 23, 1923, a special business meeting was called after a prayer meeting to discuss the purchase of a piece of property on the corner of Walnut and Los Robles.  The present building was bursting at the seams with over 1,200 members and the trustees had been looking for some time for a suitable site for a yet another new building. Mr. Fawkes was concerned about the continual drain on congregational resources from building one building after another.

As the congregation was discussing plans for the building, some worried that 1,300 seats in the sanctuary would not be sufficient, One gentleman, Harry Prinz, stood up and expressed the opinion that we would have enough seating but he foresaw that parking would become a big problem.

In keeping with the times, the overriding issue in congregational life in the 1930's was money. The debt from the new building became an enormous burden suddenly."

MORE HISTORICAL TID-BITS BEFORE OUR CELEBRATION SATURDAY

Having difficulty in selling and moving the location of First Congregational Church is not a new occurrence, as is noted in the 75th Anniversary book quoting reactions when the church was planning to move to our current building.
"Finally, the Trustees decided that the time had come to contemplate the building of a new Church. When this was announced by the Minister it was received with mixed emotions. So many wonderful things had happened in this building, and the membership had worked together so happily it came as a shock to many to think of leaving it. Perhaps it was the cramped condition that had brought this about, but there was a fine spirit of togetherness."
Facts about the current church building:
  • Lot purchased 1926 on SE corner of Los Robles and Walnut
  • Ground broken Palm Sunday, April 10, 1927
  • Cornerstone laid, September 25, 1927
  • First service on Easter, April 8, 1928
  • Building has 117 rooms and is 82,000 square feet in size
  • Cost of ground, building & original furnishings $465,000
The church owned a parsonage on south Madison Avenue in Pasadena from 1948 to 1963. It was occupied by three pastors and their families: Rev. Ray Waser, Dr. Alden Mosshammer and Dr. William McCormack. The parsonage was sold to help purchase the lot adjacent to the church on the east. The lot was cleared and made into a much- needed parking area. Since 1988 to present, pastors have been offered an equity sharing agreement on the purchase of housing.

AT THE BUILDING CELEBRATION SATURDAY, WE WILL HAVE A PHOTO OF OUR CURRENT BUILDING AVAILABLE FOR FREE TO THE FIRST THIRTY FAMILIES.
WE ALSO HAVE ABOUT FORTY COPIES OF OUR CHURCH CENTENNIAL BOOK, "KEPT BY GRACE" compiled and edited by our former Associate Pastor, Randi Walker. If you are a member and didn't get one when you joined, you may have the book for free. OTHERWISE WE WILL SELL THE COPIES FOR OUR PRINTING COST OF $20.00. Bonnie Hughes, Roberta White, Lu Burd and Mary Camacho have used the book a lot.

Youth Happenings for the Fall

We are planning several out reach outings this Fall for our middle and high school youth. Our hope is to offer two events each month. Please let us know if your youth can attend. The September outings are: Aid Africa Walk for Water on Saturday Sept. 15th. Please be in touch with Irene or Peter Keller about this and see article below. Meagan VanDeventer and Lu Burd will be the adults coordinating and walking with our youth - all ages are encouraged to attend!

The second event in September is a Friends in Deed food pantry sorting to be done on Saturday Sept. 22nd from 9-11 a.m. at Friends in Deed. Pastor Marlene, Neva Orr and Lu Burd will be the adults coordinating this event and onsite with the youth. Upper elementary and youth are welcome to help out- the maximum number of people for this is 10. Please be in touch with Meagan, Neva or Marlene if you wish to attend these events. Your parents will need to drop you off and pick you up.

Other outings will include: an athletic shoe drive to repurpose old athletic shoes, volunteering at Club 21, putting together care packages for Ronald McDonald House, sponsoring a family for the holiday through Friends in Deed, and visiting members of our church. The Youth Outreach Planning Committee is: Lu Burd, Meagan VanDeventer, Jeff Tyler, Neva Orr and Pastor Marlene.

In addition we will be holding a Confirmation Class for youth in the 7th grades through high school who are interested. Confirmation is a time for young people to learn about the traditions of the Church and God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, explore their faith, and determine if they would like to be confirmed. Pastor Marlene will be in touch with parents in the next few weeks to find a time for an initial meeting. Parents may also be in touch with Marlene with any questions.

Building Transition Update

In addition to working on the September 8th celebration, FCC staff and leaders continue to look for properties both to purchase and to lease. Our realtor Carl Whidden looks daily for listings. Pastor Marlene and members of Council and the Scouting committee are meeting and talking with a local church to lease potential space in the event that we cannot find a place to purchase before February 2019. We have spent the last two months negotiating possible terms for one church in particular - it is in the central Pasadena area, has adequate parking, dedicated office space, shared worship space, and a common theology and vision with us. We hope to have a written offer from them in the next month which will allow us to share the location and details with you. One thing we have learned through our extensive search process is that many churches either don't want renters, already have leased their available space, or are too small to accommodate us. In addition, we have learned that the 10:00 worship hour is the preferred time for many churches which means that we will have to adjust our worship time so that we have access to the parking lot and will not have conflicts with the earlier worshipers. We are looking at a starting time of 11:30 to be able to have the most ease in sharing space. We should be able to have some small group meetings Sunday morning and before that for up to 15-20 people onsite. There are many positives to this potential location. Please keep us in your prayers as we work to find a future home for our church.

Proposed Amendment to our Bylaws
The Executive Committee, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Church and Ministry, recommends the following amendment to Central Association's Bylaws as section "j" on Page 9 of 11, line 382:   Section IX. Committees, 2. Church and Ministry:

(j) Sections of the Committee may meet separately from the Committee of the Whole, on, at most, a quarterly basis, as that Section's workload or agenda may require.  When a Section elects to meet separately from the Committee of the Whole, a written report must be submitted to the Chair of the Committee prior to the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Committee.  At any meeting of the Committee in which a Section is not present because that Section has or will meet separately in that month, no formal decisions will be made by the Committee.  Any pending votes will carry over to the next meeting of the Committee of the whole.  The quorum for any Sectional meeting shall be a majority of its membership.  The quorum for the Committee of the Whole shall be a majority of its membership.  The quorum for two Sections meeting together shall be a majority of their combined membership.

Explanation:  As you may remember at the Fall meeting on Oct. 28, 2017,  this item (paragraph "j") was removed from the bylaws and referred to the Committee on Church & Ministry for rewording.  The above amendment is the result of that referral.
