The annual Diocesan Convention will be held in Redding on Nov. 9-10, 2018.
The Pre-Convention packet is available on our  website.

Convention registration is now open! P lease purchase your tickets as soon as possible to avoid the late registration fee of $25.00 and to help the Office of the Bishop prepare most efficiently for convention. Pre-Convention Gathering to Focus on Baptismal Ministry
Our third Pre-Convention Gathering topic is " Following God's Call: From Church Chores to Ministry."  How can our church communities cultivate and support ongoing vocational discernment for brand new and long-time leaders? How can we cultivate spiritual practices that sustain each person's baptismal ministry inside and outside the walls of our churches?

Join us for a morning of learning, discussion, and discernment about these questions.  The event is free, and lunch will be provided.  Learn more here.

Bishop invites retired clergy to lunch - Nov. 29

vase-flowers.jpg
One of our bishop's ongoing ministries is fellowship with the retired clergy and spouses/partners of the diocese. One way this takes form is in twice-a-year lunches at churches around the diocese. These are wonderful opportunities for informal sharing and connection.

The next retired clergy lunch with the bishop is Thursday, Nov. 29, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., graciously hosted by All Saints, Sacramento. There is no cost to invitees, but we do ask that you reserve in advance and let us know of any dietary restrictions (see below for reservation info).

At this event a short presentation about financial abuse that targets elders will be offered by Chaplain to the Retired Clergy, the Rev. Dr. Christine Leigh-Taylor. A longer version of this information was given to all the Province VIII Chaplains to the Retired at their April 2018 meeting, and it is too good and too relevant to keep to ourselves. The information is from the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and each attendee will be given a handbook for future reference.

Please let Jacqi Seppi ([email protected] ) know that you plan to attend. Please contact Christine ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns.
Bishop's Book for fall 2018

Bishop Barry Beisner has selected "The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" as this fall's Bishop's Book. Join us in reading about this conversation on joy by two remarkable spiritual leaders.

"Joy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and a clear sign of God's presence and favor. In this time of hard hearts and deep divisions, the Church needs to be seeking true joy -- as a way to build community, nurture our souls, and witness to the world that God exists and that we are God's beloved creation," Bishop Barry said.

From authors Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama:  "We hope this small book will be an invitation to more joy and more happiness...We are sharing what two friends, from very different worlds, have witnessed and learned in our long lives. We hope you will discover whether what is included here is true by applying it in your own life."

You can purchase the book through the Trinity Cathedral Bookshop or on Amazon. A discussion guide for book groups is here.

Immigration talk and Q&A in Davis and Napa

Images of Central American families torn apart at our southern border have been prompting public outrage. The U.S. government explains such measures as necessary to  deter "illegal immigration," though families seeking asylum keep arriving, undeterred. Meanwhile, few in our country ask: Why are families willing to risk their lives to seek safe haven in the U.S.? What are they fleeing? And how can we address the root causes or "push factors" of this migration crisis?

Join Noah Bullock, Executive Director of Cristosal, on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., at St. Martin's, Davis, for a talk on immigration entitled "Why are they fleeing?", with a Q&A and reception to follow.

Mr Bullock will give the same talk at St. Mary's, Napa, on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 3-5 p.m. Both events are free, with free-will offering to support the work of Cristosal.
Mr. Bullock will also be preaching at Grace, St. Helena, at the 8 & 10 a.m services on Sunday, Sept. 16, with a Q&A between the services.

Come learn about these issues and what we can do to help in a conversation with the head of the lead NGO working on forced displacement due to violence in the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras-the countries from which most families at our border are fleeing. Bullock will talk about the current state of violence and progress made on behalf of victims, such as a landmark July 13 ruling from El Salvador's Supreme Court protecting victims. He will also touch on Cristosal's role in the historic El Mozote massacre trial, and why accountability for atrocities of the past is vital to building peaceful societies today.

Sustainable Development Goals grants are available

This year, your commission has responded to the emergency request from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for help for the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. The hospital was overwhelmed during the border skirmishes with Israel with injured of all ages and walks of life while access to equipment and supplies was curtailed. We have sent $1,000 out of this year's funds to support the life saving efforts of this hospital.

The remainder of our funds are available for projects that support one or more of the above goals for the development of locally sustainable projects. We are inviting our congregations to consider applying  for grants supporting projects or programs overseas that meet one or more of these goals. We are particularly interested in ways partnerships and projects are being developed in cooperation with and supporting local efforts.

Download the  grant application; the deadline to apply is Sept. 20.
News from the Episcopal Church

Episcopal Church
A spiritual pilgrimage can lay bare old scars, change who you are and how you see other people. That's what many members of  St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Atlanta reported after experiencing the new  National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the collective story of more than 4,400 people who were lynched in this country. These 82 travelers also stopped at the  Legacy Museum  nearby, which connects slavery and racial terrorism to mass incarceration in the United States. Read more here.
