God of Love and Peace,
Conflicts around the world
and across the ages
have asked sons and daughters
to be soldiers.
So many have paid the ultimate price
as they fought for freedom.
We honor their sacrifice this day
and remember that families and communities
also pay the price when life is lost in battle.
Today our hearts are heavy that we have not yet found a way to peace.
Be with us this Memorial Day as we remember,
not only those who have gone before us,
but also, those who continue to serve.
May soldiers and their leaders
have all the courage they need,
all the strength they need,
all the patience they need,
and all the wisdom they need,
to seek your shalom,
to honor their neighbor
and to love their enemy.
May they know, and be,
a living witness to your love
which is the greatest power in the world;
Your love which cannot be constrained
by borders, politics, race or clan,
Your love which is freely given to all.
Most wonderful God,
you know that a soldier's deepest prayer
is always for peace,
Shelter in the shadow of your wing
all who have suffered the loss of a loved one,
As well as all those
who currently find themselves in places of armed conflict.
Hold them, and their families,
in the palm of your hand
so that they may know the presence
of your steadfast love, now and always. Amen
