The North Carolina Healthy Out-Of-School Time Recognition Program (NC HOST) offers a voluntary recognition for out-of-school time programs that provide foods, beverages and physical activities that promote lifelong health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Out-of-school time programs that meet a set of standards are eligible for NC HOST recognition.
Steps to Apply:
Step 1: Complete the NC Healthy Out-of-School Time
Assessment.
Step 2: Complete the NC Healthy Out-of-School Time
Application.
NC HOST recognition will be awarded at a Bronze, Silver or Gold Level.
- Bronze denotes programs that meet a minimum number of required standards.
- Silver denotes programs that meet all of the minimum standards and demonstrate progress in meeting additional standards.
- Gold denotes programs that consistently meet all standards.

NC OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME MAPPING DATABASE
The NC Center for Afterschool Programs [NC CAP] developed a statewide, searchable database for out-of-school time programs (OST) programs that serve K-12 youth before school, after school, summers, weekends and during school breaks. Programs can take place in schools, school-age child care centers, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, universities, libraries, museums, camps, and other locations can register their programs in the statewide mapping database. You can utilize this database to search for information on program locations, activities, number and grades of youth served. This database helps families, schools, communities and elected officials locate programs for their youth. It also aids in identifying community assets and gaps in out-of-school time programming.

SEVERAL NEWLY INTRODUCED BILLS WOULD SUPPORT AFTERSCHOOL, SUMMER LEARNING
While August is usually a slow month in the nation's capital and Congress is usually in recess, this year there has been a great deal of activity during the doldrums of summer. In late July Congress passed and the president signed into law a
reauthorization of the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. And in mid-August the full Senate is expected to debate and pass a Labor, Health and Human Services, Education (LHHS) spending bill for the first time since 2007. Additionally, two new bills have recently been introduced that would support the work of local afterschool and summer learning providers.
Summer Learning and Meals Act of 2018
The bills authors' see the legislation as helping address both the opportunity gap and summer learning loss. While more affluent children often participate in extracurricular activities during the summer, too many low-income children lose access to learning opportunities when school is closed. According to one Johns Hopkins study, by ninth grade, accumulated summer reading losses accounted for two-thirds of the reading achievement gap between low-income children and middle-income children. Research has also shown that high-quality summer learning programs can help students maintain or even increase their academic skills over the summer months, especially in reading.
Restructuring Underutilized Resources for Advancing Learning (RURAL) Act
On the House side, Rep. Loebsack (D-Iowa) re-introduced the Restructuring Underutilized Resources for Advancing Learning Act or the
RURAL Act (HR 6526) on July 25. In addition to establishing an Office of Rural Education at the federal Department of Education and other functions, the legislation would "enhance afterschool programs in rural areas by helping communities establish afterschool programs and improve existing programs by overcoming barriers to service."
Among the findings cited as justification for the bill are the following:
- Investing in afterschool programs helps children in rural communities break out of the cycle of poverty and creates opportunities for at-risk youth.
- In areas in which resources are limited, afterschool programs are often the only source of supplemental enrichment in literacy, nutrition education, technology, and preparation for college and entrance exams.
- Children attending rural schools have the lowest median per-student funding for afterschool programs under the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program (21st CCLC) under part B of Title IV of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 as compared to children attending urban and suburban schools

2018 SUMMERPALOOZA! SUMMITS
SAVE THE DATE for the 2018 SummerPalooza! Summits
The SummerPalooza! Summits are day-long celebrations and planning events where sponsors, sites, and community partners can learn about creative and successful strategies to increase participation in and expand awareness of NC Summer Nutrition Programs.
This year's theme "Strength in Numbers" represents a focus on collaboration between diverse partners to create more sustainable and successful summer programs. All private nonprofits, public organizations and advocates interested in eliminating summer hunger for children are invited to participate in the 5th annual SummerPalooza! Summits!
There will be four regional SummerPalooza! Summits across the state this fall. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited, so register now!
There is no conference fee and lunch will be provided. Additional details will be provided with the registration confirmation email.

BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND CAREER AWARDS FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Science and Math Teachers (CASMT) application is now available online. The Career Award for Science and Mathematics Teachers is a five-year award available to outstanding science and/or mathematics teachers in the North Carolina public primary and secondary schools. The purpose of this award is to recognize teachers who have demonstrated solid knowledge of science and/or mathematics content and have outstanding performance records in educating children.
The deadline for submission is September 24th, 2018.

Through the
Love Learning
campaign, Lands' End is leveraging NSLA's vast network of experiential summer programs to shine a spotlight specifically on quality programs that bring learning to life in informal learning spaces and support families in meaningful ways. Particular focus will be given to summer programs that focus on environmental stewardship, STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, math, arts) as candidates for
the First Annual Lands' End Love Learning Award.
The Walmart Community Grant is for community development projects. Primary consideration for the grant program is to support local organizations with programs that align with Walmart and the Foundation's areas of giving which include (1) hunger relief and healthy eating, (2) health and human services, (3) quality of life, (4) education, (5) community and economic development, (6) diversity and inclusion, (7) public safety and (8) environmental sustainability.
T
hrough the E(2) Energy to Educate Grant Program, Constellation Energy offers students in grades 6-12 opportunities to experience problem-solving of today's and tomorrow's energy challenges. Grant funds support projects designed to enhance students' understanding of science and technology, and inspire them to think differently about energy.
Project Learning Tree offers GreenWorks! grants up to $1,000 to schools and youth organizations for environmental service-learning projects that link classroom learning to the real world. Through the grant, students will implement an action project that they will help to design to green their school or to improve an aspect of their neighborhood's environment.
The Kinder Morgan Foundations Grant benefits youth in communities where the funding source has a business presence. Focus areas include arts education programs and academic programs, including tutoring. The program must benefit youth in grades K-12 only. Non profits, public school sand private schools may apply.
Through ALDI Smart Kids, ALDI Stores partner with organizations that make a positive impact on kids' health and wellness.
The Westinghouse Charitable Giving Program provides financial support to communities in one or more strategic areas of giving including (1) Education with a focus on STEM, (2) Environment Sustainability, (3) Community Safety and Vitality.
