Worcester Learns All Summer Long

Counteracting summer learning loss is an important component of the Foundation’s Early Childhood Initiative. To address the “summer slide,” a phenomenon that can be particularly damaging to the achievement potential of low income students, the Foundation - in close partnership with the United Way of Central MA - collaborates with local organizations that deliver literacy curricula in their summer programs.

Known as the Worcester Summer Literacy Initiative, programs reached over 600 children at 11 different sites this year.
For more information about the Worcester Summer Literacy Initiative or the Early Childhood Initiative contact Chris O'Keeffe , GWCF Vice President for Program.

Donor family visits Foundation to talk about their giving plans

“How do nonprofits pay for things if they don’t make any money?”

“How do they differentiate themselves from other nonprofits doing similar work?”

"What if no one comes their fundraisers?"

"How do people who need help know where to find it?"

These questions were posed by the Mancini children, ages 7-16, during a recent office visit arranged by their mother.

Tina and Don Mancini Jr., created their Donor Advised Fund to involve the whole family in granting decisions. On an afternoon in late August, they came in to talk about philanthropy and nonprofits. We were so impressed by the kids' curiosity and eagerness to be involved in the fund.

The Mancini family is proving that it’s never too early to have thoughtful conversations about philanthropy.

Visits like this are a special benefit for donors. Contact Liz Nye , Donor Services Associate, to arrange a meeting of your own.
