Things to Do
When it was completed in 1902, the New York Herald proclaimed that Whitehall, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach, was "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." The 75-room, 100,000-square-foot Gilded Age mansion was a wedding present for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. The couple used the home as a winter retreat from 1902 until Flagler's death in 1913, establishing the Palm Beach season for the wealthy of the Gilded Age.
Today, Whitehall is a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public as the Flagler Museum, featuring guided tours, changing exhibits, and special programs. In addition to touring Whitehall, during the fall and winter months visitors may explore the Museum's changing exhibition gallery which features temporary exhibits on topics related to Florida history and America's Gilded Age. The current exhibition, Kiss the Ocean, about the building of the Panama Canal is of particular note and interest. There are also permanent exhibits on the history of Henry Flagler's life and career and the Museum's extensive lace collection. The Flagler Kenan Pavilion, designed in the style of a 19th century Beaux Arts railway palace, houses Henry Flagler's private rail car, No. 91, and is open to visitors year round. Built in 1886 for Flagler's personal use, the rail car was acquired by the Museum in 1959 as an artifact of Florida history and an important part of Flagler's story.

REAL ESTATE TRENDS
BallenIsles Sales
Now that the pause button caused by the COVID-19 orders to shelter-at-home has begun to ease, there is clear evidence that demand for properties in BallenIsles remains strong. There were 7 sales closed in May. Not stellar but certainly healthy.
This last month we fielded many calls from buyers looking to relocate from more densely populated areas. In general, they are seeking not just our year-round warm weather, but also the safety and security BallenIsles is known for, the favorable tax structure Florida offers, and of course our natural beauty, varied social offerings and active lifestyle. The other inclinations that we are hearing are the desire for more space - especially related to home offices and in-home gyms, as well as outdoor living space. After essentially being prisoners in their own homes, residents have had time to consider what their priorities are in this new world.
With limited inventory in the community and strong demand, the very best properties will sell more quickly, as our read on buyers is that they appear to have a greater sense of urgency to make their moves. On the other hand, those properties that may require extensive renovations or even rebuilding may sit on the market longer unless well priced.
