Sunday Readings and Music

The Readings for this Sunday
In the reading from the Hebrew Bible the prophet foretells a time when the judgment of Israel will be ended and the mighty Lord will bring victory and renewal to God’s people. The city of Jerusalem and its holy Mount Zion may rejoice and sing. All enemies will be defeated and the crippled healed. The fortunes of Israel will be restored, and the nation will be praised by all peoples.
Canticle 9
(Isaiah 12:2-6) The First Song of Isaiah
A song of confidence and hope in God the Savior, for the Holy One is in the midst of the people who joyfully proclaim the Lord’s deeds.
In this New Testament lesson Paul invites the new disciples at Philippi to exult in the Lord, who is near at hand. In prayer and thanksgiving they need have no anxiety. God’s peace, which is beyond human understanding, will keep their hearts and thoughts in Jesus. Even though Paul was experiencing his own troubles and may at this time have been in prison, this letter is often called “the epistle of joy.”
In our gospel John the Baptist preaches repentance to all those who hear his call to baptism, and he tells them of the mighty one to come. It is not sufficient to claim to be children of Abraham. All who are to escape judgment must learn to share with others and to be just in their daily work. John himself is not the Christ but the servant of the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and a refining fire.

Introduction
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women and
blest is there fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of death. Amen.
Refrain
Gentle woman, quiet light, morning
star, so strong and bright, gentle
Mother, peaceful dove, teach us
wisdom; teach us love.
1
You were chosen by the Father
your were chosen for the Son. You were
chosen from all women and for
woman, shining one.
Refrain
2
Blessed are you among women,
blest in turn all women, too. Blessed
they with peaceful spirits.
blessed they with gentle hearts.

Collect for Sunday
Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever.
Amen. ~BCP 212
For All Baptized Christians
Grant, Lord God, to all who have been baptized into the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, that, as we have put away the old life of sin, so we may be renewed in the spirit of our minds, and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen. ~BCP 252
A Prayer for a Bishop Search
O God, we ask you to bring us your next faithful servant to minister to the people of Southern California and Yuma, Arizona as we work to bring healing and peace through a commitment to justice, a desire to grow deeper relationships with Christ and one another, and a foundation of respecting the dignity of all. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen

Pledge forms are available beginning this Sunday. The forms are on the table near the front door to the church. Your contribution helps us maintain the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ through St. Hugh’s. Make a pledge of support to St. Hugh’s in 2019. ~Fr. Dan and Neil Passage, Treasurer

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be the fulfillment of this prayer. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek you [God] here may find you, and be filled with your joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
