Disneyland to re-open for guests next month
You may have heard the good news that the Disneyland Resort plans to begin a phased re-opening next month, starting on July 9 with Downtown Disney. The company expects to allow guests to visit Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on July 17. Read the full press release here .

I want to recognize our business community for coming together to support employees and small businesses affected by the shutdown. I’m also proud that the city of Anaheim has dedicated $6 million in convention center reserve funds to market our city as a destination as tourists and convention goers return. This investment is on top of more than $7 million in direct aid to non-profits and small businesses allocated by the Anaheim City Council to facilitate recovery.

Please join me in welcoming back our Anaheim visitors as well as all of our resort area and hospitality workers. I’m excited to get our city’s economy back on track!
Anaheim Budget Update
While the news of the Disneyland Resort’s re-opening next month is encouraging, the coronavirus shutdowns, restrictions on travel and prohibitions of large gatherings have greatly affected our resort district and negatively impacted our city budget.

We are projecting a future rebound in our primary revenue source – TOT (transient occupancy tax), or taxes on hotel visits. However, a presentation given by the city’s finance director at last Tuesday’s council meeting indicated that we could collect around $50 million less in TOT this fiscal year (which ends June 30) and as much as $90 million less in the next fiscal year.

To fill these gaps, we’ll be tapping into the city’s reserves and freezing non-essential spending. Going forward, all options are on the table to address our shortfalls including furloughs and other concessions from our labor groups. We will have to ask every city department to be a part of spending reductions. At the same time, we will work to ensure the city can maintain service levels and continue to protect our communities.

Other funding sources which are on the horizon include revenues from a successful deal with Angels Baseball. This could generate $325 million in cash and community benefits as well as tens of millions in revenue as planned developments come online. In addition, Congress continues to debate additional federal stimulus which may include payments to local governments for budget shortfalls.

The Anaheim City Council will vote on the proposed budget on 6/23/20.

Council votes no on cannabis
At our last Anaheim City Council Meeting, my colleagues and I debated whether to allow the sale and production of cannabis within the city. Thousands of residents sent emails and letters to council expressing their views.

The council deliberated on both an ordinance to authorize cannabis, as well as the question of whether to ask Anaheim voters if they would like to tax cannabis at the city level. After a lengthy debate, the council voted against enacting an ordinance and against sending the taxation question to the voters.

When California recently legalized recreational use of cannabis through a 2016 ballot initiative, the decision of whether to permit cannabis was left to individual cities. I think our city wisely made the decision not to permit cannabis sales in our city. I don’t think it fits in with Anaheim’s family-friendly reputation, and I don’t believe making cannabis more available will benefit our city’s at-risk youth.

For those who would like to access cannabis, some cities in the region and the county have permitted it. In addition, home delivery of cannabis is also allowed.

Anaheim Hills resident Ramona Brooks celebrates 100th birthday.
Happy 100th Birthday to Anaheim Hills resident Ramona Brooks. To help her celebrate this momentous occasion, family, friends and neighbors organized a birthday parade through the neighborhoods around Eucalyptus Park, in which I was honored to participate. Ramona has lived in Anaheim Hills for 42 years, was the 2011 Ms. Senior Anaheim Hills, and is such a beautiful and wonderful person. Happy Birthday Ramona!
Anaheim commemorates Flag Day 2020 with a red, white and blue vehicle procession.
This past Sunday, I participated in the 25th Anaheim Flag Day Celebration. This was the first year we had a vehicle procession in lieu of the traditional flag day parade cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. I'd like to give a special thanks and congratulations to Sally Feldhaus and the Flag Day Committee for making this event happen against all odds. Happy National Flag Day.
Annual 4th of July celebration cancelled.
We will miss celebrating together this year due to the pandemic.
