Southwest Florida RPC Staffs STOP
The Southwest Florida RPC recently stood up a new task force - the Southwest Florida Task Force on Overdose Prevention - STOP. STOP is a collaborative network of partners who meet bi-monthly. The mission for the six-county region is the reduction of substance use disorder. Partners include treatment centers, law enforcement, emergency medical services, drug-free coalitions, medical professions, county commissioners and other community stakeholders.
The task force is focused on addressing prevention education, intervention and recovery. STOP has teamed with community partners for grant writing, data collection and review, health fairs, summits and other regional collaboration efforts to address substance abuse and overdose prevention. East Central Florida Regional Resiliency Collaborative
The East Central Florida RPC held a signing ceremony for the newly formed East Central Florida Regional Resilience Collaborative on October 23rd. With over 100 people present, East Central Florida RPC Chairman Sean Parks reminded us, "Every local government, no matter the size of the budget, is forced to consider short-term shocks and long-term stressors; it is the common ground we share in this region." The Memorandum of Understanding, executed during the ceremony, embodies the resilience framework pillars of Health + Equity, Built Infrastructure + Natural Environment, and Economic Resilience. Woven throughout these pillars are goals that include a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and risks and vulnerabilities and an increase in sustainability efforts throughout the region. The MOU formalizes the partnership and creates a unified vision toward a more resilient region.
The 27 formalized partners, the Council Sub-Committee and the Steering Committee members are driving the direction and defining the goals of this initiative. Emerald Coast RC Promotes Mobility Week
Northwest Florida celebrated the second annual statewide initiative Mobility Week - an annual collection of outreach events intended to bring attention to safe multi-modal transportation choices from October 25 through November 1, 2019.
To promote Mobility Week, the Emerald Coast RC, the rideOn program, and each of the Transportation Planning Organizations, staffed by Emerald Coast RC, partnered with local transit providers to coordinate Transit Ride Along press events. These included:
- EC Rider Transit Ride Along (October 24, 2019): Participants rode Route 1 from Northwest Florida State College to Okaloosa County Elder Services and included Okaloosa-Walton TPO board members, Okaloosa County Commissioner Carolyn Ketchel and City of Destin Councilmember Skip Overdier.
- Bay Town Trolley Ride Along (October 29, 2019): Participants rode Route 6 in its entirety, from the Bay County Library. Bay County Transportation Planning Organization Chairperson, City of Callaway Mayor Pamn Henderson participated in the event.
- ECAT Ride Along (October 30, 2019): Participants rode Route 45 from the Rosa L. Parks Transit Complex to Pensacola City Hall. Participants included City of Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson and Florida-Alabama TPO board members; Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May, Escambia County Commissioner Robert Bender, City of Pensacola Councilmember Ann Hill, and City of Pensacola Councilmember Jared Moore.
Mobility Week first launched in 2016 in Central Florida. The success of the Central Florida region in bringing together regional partners to promote the message of safety and multi-modal transportation prompted the expansion of the initiative statewide in 2018.
During Mobility Week, cities, counties, and transportation partner agencies host events to promote
transportation choices
, highlight transportation achievements, and roll out new initiatives or policies.

"RAPTOR 1" Visits Tampa Bay RPC
Manatee County's Emergency Medical Service mass casualty response bus "Raptor 1" made an appearance at the Tampa Bay RPC on October 14th. District Chief Keith Lock gave a presentation and a guided tour during the regular council meeting. Manatee County Emergency Medical Service has been an operating division within the Manatee County Department of Public Safety. since 1972. Due to recent needs within the community and surrounding counties, an innovative service of emergency medical transportation became necessary. This concept includes re-purposing and retrofitting heavy-duty transit coaches that have reached the end of their useful life and can now be used to provide multi-person casualty transportation. Raptor 1 was recognized in the Community Preparedness category of the Tampa Bay RPC's 2019 Future of the Region Award.
