Interesting Industry Information
How Does the Job Market Look?
The U.S. Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a "M onthly Jobs Report"  soon after the beginning of each month. Each report describes the previous month's employment situation, based on data such as the number of jobs that were added to the economy and the unemployment rate.  According to t he  July Jobs Report ,  t he US economy saw an increase of 157,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate decreased to 3.9%.

Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC)  Industry 

As stated in a recent Associated General Contractors of America article, the BLS reported a positive month for the construction industry. Employment increased to 19,000 and unemployment decrease to 3.4%. While the numbers are still below some economist's expectations, industry earnings improved during this time as well. 



A recent Architect Magazine   article indicated that the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry as a whole spiked .  For example (and illustrated in the image below):  
  • Architectural and engineering services increased by 4,800 jobs  
  • Heavy and civil engineering increased by 800 jobs
  • Nonresidential construction increased by 3,800 positions
  • Specialty trade contractors increased by 14,200 jobs

Privacy Concerns: 
Google Tracking 
Most Google users realize that they are being tracked by the company to a certain degree, but many have been shocked to learn the extent of the data collected. A recent Associated Press (AP) investigation revealed that Google is tracking a significant amount of location information, even when individuals utilize privacy settings that prohibit this function. 

The investigation also revealed that Google shares time stamped location information with law enforcement, which enables them to identify specific devices near a particular crime scene. While there are benefits to this knowledge, many feel that users should understand how their information is actually being tracked and used. 

Google claims that it has provided ample notification, but the explanations were relatively hidden and often unclear. Many u sers thought that once location tracking was disabled, it would apply across the board in all apps. While i t is possible to delete this information, it is a tedious process (unless you don't mind deleting all of your stored information at one time). 

Google is now facing a class action lawsuit, but the outcome is still unknown. In the meantime, users should familiarize themselves with the situation, thoroughly check privacy settings and pay attention to any changes in company policies, practices and government regulations.

However, if general prudence isn't enough, last years' devastating hurricanes and wildfires should serve as an all-too-recent reminder of the importance of preparation.  After all, it takes time for emergency responders to arrive, for rescues to take place and for communities to recover. We all hope for the best, but can be essential to plan for the worst.
