Spoken Word Open Mic with Rudy Francisco

Join us for an open mic night featuring spoken word poet Rudy Francisco, author of the debut collection, Helium, whose work has defined poetry for a generation of new readers. If you would like to perform that night, please let us know ahead of time as the event is at capacity.  

RSVP's are required to attend this event. Due to the high number of RSVP's, we are now requesting that to secure a seat, please purchase a copy of Helium in-store or online. Rudy will also be signing copies of Helium purchased at Cellar Door first, so your purchase will guarantee a seat and that your copy will be signed. Experiencing Comics Release Party

Congratulations Rachelle Cruz, winner of the American Book Award!

We are excited to celebrate the release of local author and educator Rachelle Cruz's Experiencing Comics: An Introduction to Reading, Discussing, and Creating Comics, which shows readers how to critically examine the craft and storytelling elements found inside a graphic novel or comic.

Cruz will be joined by graphic novelists Yumi Sakugawa (There is No Right Way to Meditate, I Choose You), MariNaomi (Turning Japanese), Taneka Stotts (Elements), and Nilah Magruder (MFK).

Educators' Workshop: Teaching & Experiencing Comics in the Classroom
Friday, October 19 at 5 pm

Join Tracy Edmunds (curriculum specialist and educational consultant), Derek Heid(English teacher at Temecula Vally High School), and Rachelle Cruz (UC Riverside Lecturer and editor of Experiencing Comics) in an educators' workshop on the benefits of teaching and incorporating comics at any educational level and subject. Tracy, Derek, and Rachelle will talk about their strategies for comics in the classroom as well as the importance of inclusivity through comics before opening the conversation to questions.

We're joining the ACLU's effort to Get-Out-The-Vote by writing postcards to voters to increase turnout rates. Drop in to one of the open writing sessions below and share why you're voting like your rights depend on it this year and why the recipient should too. We'll provide the materials and example messages at our back table!

In Conversation: Norm Ellstrand & Roger Ransom

Please join us in welcoming local authors Norm Ellstrand (Sex on the Kitchen Table: The Romance of Plants and Your Food, out 9/22) and Roger Ransom (Gambling on War: Confidence, Fear, and Tragedy of the First World War) for a conversation and Q&A.  Ellstrand and Ransom will also discuss their personal journey of writing works that straddle the line between the popular and the scholarly.

An eye-opening medley of serious science, culinary delights, and humor, Sex on the Kitchen Table offers new insight into fornicating flowers, salacious squash, and what we owe to them. In Gambling on War, Ransom sheds new light on the enduring puzzle that is the First World War by employing insights from prospect theory and notions of risk and uncertainty.

We're incredibly pleased to welcome author and Distinguished Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o for a reading and signing! 

Thiong'o is the author of several novels and memoirs, including Wrestling with the Devil, Dreams in a Time of War: a Childhood Memoir, and Wizard of the Crow, a book club pick from our Sci-Fi & Fantasy and Black Lit Book Clubs. Our Black Lit book club will be discussing Wizard of the Crow Friday, September 28th at 6.00 pm and we welcome you to join our discussion.
