A Letter from Our President

Dear Magnificat Community,

I hope you are staying warm during these frigid days!

As you'll see throughout this edition of the Magnificat Monthly, January was a busy month for our students both in and out of the classroom. I hope you enjoy reading about our burgeoning entrepreneurs and computer programmers whose skills earned them high ranks this month in the Veale Youth Entrepreneurship Forum and Hyland Software Hackathon. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments!

February is always an exciting time at Magnificat. Over the last two weeks we have been receiving applications for admission, and later this month we will officially invite members of the next freshman class into the Magnificat High School legacy. In the Magnificat, Mary proclaims "From this day, all generations will call be blessed." With each passing year, it is our great joy to invite more young women into the generations-long tradition of our Mission to learn, lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary's Magnificat .

In support of this Mission, I hope you will be able to join me here at Magnificat for our 30 th Annual Gala on March 23! The Blue Streak Disco Ball is sure to be a great time that will raise critical funds for financial assistance and the holistic educational programming that is unique to Magnificat. I look forward to seeing you there!

Gratefully,
Moira Clark '77
A Prayer for February
by Sr. Helen Jean Novy, H.M., Vice President of Mission

February, the floating month
often lending parts of itself to Lent,
is fully committed this season
to themes of Ordinary Time!

Christ, You would shake us up this February
so that the goodness in each of us
would continue to rise up
enabling us to take You to our worlds.

Let us know how beloved we are.
Warm what is cold in our lives and world.
Soothe all that is aching and forlorn.
Rejuvenate all that is listless.

Thus, fired with the energy of Your Holy Spirit,
we may see with the light of faith
that all will be well
if we seek to follow Your will. Amen.

We invite you to read the
February Reflection  "Apocalyptic Thinking and Prophetic Acting: The Immeasurable Value of Prayer."

Please join us this month on Wednesday, February 13 for the recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. All are welcome!

Alumnae and friends: registration is open for the Lenten Night of Reflection, "Our Accompanying God: The Meaning of the Cross," with Sr. Helen Jean Novy on Monday, March 11.
Magnificat's 30th Annual Gala

Blue Streak Disco Ball
March 23, 2019
6 p.m.
at Magnificat High School

The 2019 Magnificat  Gala  is quickly approaching! Please plan to join us for this celebration of our school and students. Click here for more information.

This year the celebration will take us back to the days of "The Hustle" and "Saturday Night Fever" with dancing and live music by Cleveland's own Disco Inferno!

Your support - --      whether attending that evening, donating an auction item or gift card, or sponsoring a table - --      provides vital funding that allows Magnificat to continue building on our strong foundation for future students. We thank you for all that you do and we look forward to seeing you at this year's Gala!
Magnificat Entrepreneurs Advance Big Ideas

Congratulations to our student entrepreneurs who were recently selected to participate in the semifinals of the thinkBIG! Challenge sponsored by the Veale Youth Entrepreneurship Forum:
  • Emmaline Jenne '20 and Grayce Shuker '19, "MiraCoat"
  • Caroline Boeckman '19, "No Stop Pops"
  • Camille Kutz '19, "Rise and Align"
Twenty-eight semifinalists representing 13 schools were selected from a pool of 205 entries in which students explored and developed big ideas for business ventures and social enterprises.

Having advanced to the second round of the competition, our students will now prepare and finalize a 60-90 second pitch video and a slide deck with the help of professionals at Case Western Reserve University and the Sears think[box] workshop in February. Best of luck to our students as they compete to become a Final Four Challenge team at the
thinkBIG! Summit in March!

Hyland Hackathon 2nd Place Finish

Congratulations to seniors Kaitlyn Sweeney '19, Shannon McCarthy '19, and Lauren Revilock '19 for earning 2nd place at Hyland Software's weekend-long Hackathon competition!

The only all-girl team in a pool of 18 area high schools, they worked 30 hours straight to develop their app and website that was judged by a panel of Hyland executives.  Caitlin Nowlin '05, Hyland's Technical Outreach Program Manager, presented our students with their award.

This month's Archives Antics feature, written by archivist Mary Cay Doherty, will begin a three-part series about the history of athletics at Magnificat.

begins with Sr. Claire Young (Sr. Mary Pius), whose contributions merited her place in the inaugural class of Magnificat's Athletic Hall of Fame and continue to affect Magnificat athletics and school spirit..."
