Let it go
With Rev. Kevin Lawson
We welcome our February spiritual theme of Surrender/Letting Go. Rev. Kevin will share thoughts and reflection upon why we hold onto that which actually bogs us down. How might we lighten our spirits? Let go and create space for what's new, fresh and life affirming? This is also Stewardship Kick Off Sunday, come hear of the exciting news and events upcoming, as we look to support and fund our community for the year ahead. Rev. Kevin and Wendy Bruun, stewardship lead, will speak to this year's campaign.

~ Here We Grow ~
Beacon is launching our annual stewardship pledge campaign.   Stewardship and fundraising undergird everything that a faith community does and call us into deeper connection with each other. While connected to our congregation's annual financial planning and budgeting, stewardship is much bigger.  It is rooted in our faith principles and inspires our generous support of Unitarian Universalism, as well as our commitment to Beacon as our congregational home and the place where we will continue to grow.
This year, we are layering our approach with a month-long suite of testimonials, conversations, and messages that will lead up to a celebration Sunday.  We hope that you will attend Sunday Worship Services, read the forthcoming weekly news and information we will share, and join us on March 3rd for our pledging and celebration event.

This coming Sunday, February 3, we will briefly step away from the curriculum of Miracles and enjoy our First Sunday Fun during RE class time.  Linda Ochi will offer a waffle breakfast and Sue Strobel will tell us about the flagstaff family food center!
More details about First Sunday Fun here!
Find out more details about what you can do at home to celebrate the cross quarter day Imbolc this weekend or other ideas throughout the week in the   Religious Exploration blog.

Earlier this month we had a wonderful Coming of Age retreat with six youth participants and their mentors.  They were adventurous on Friday evening during a Scavenger Hunt in Flagstaff!  Throughout the weekend they learned about how they relate to the world and each other through themed workshops and activities.  Those who stepped up and gave extra time for the success of the retreat are much appreciated and do deserve kuddos...Cynthia Seelhammer, Kat Vaughan-Wiltsee, Moez Boussarsar, Linda Ochi, Laura Lyn, Carrie Henderson, Kelsey Vaughan-Wiltsee, Dru Monroe, Steve Zeldes, Jack Doggett, Mark Alexander, Kay Johnson, Anne Wittke, Bill Towler, and Tom Marcinko.

Dear Members and Friends,

I seem to be the bearer of disappointing news these days. The contractor's bid for the new structure at the church came in on Tuesday afternoon. It is $150,000 higher than had been projected cost by the contractor in August of 2018 ($286, 066). Nothing prepared us for the new price of $436,000.

What now? Theresa and Carl have called a meeting of the Building Expansion Team and the Board of Trustees for Wednesday night, February 6. We will examine the pricing to try to understand where the difference comes from. We are also looking into getting another estimator to tell us whether the pricing is in line for a project of this size, in the Flagstaff building environment.

As you are aware, there is a congregational town hall scheduled for Feb. 3, after the service. The intent was/is to obtain feedback on the direction of the ministerial search. That will be first on the agenda.  We will also take questions related to the project, however, there will probably be much that we don't know yet.

You will be informed in the Weekly News as we work through this. We still believe it is a doable project. The time frame to determine how we can move ahead is about two months.  You may also contact Theresa deBoer, Project Manager, Carl Taylor, BET Chair, or me if you have specific questions.

~ Access to the Beacon Building~

The code to the front door of Beacon has changed.  Members requiring access to the building during non-business hours should contact the Beacon office at 928-779-4492 or email [email protected].  Be sure to leave your name, phone number, and a time you will be available to be contacted by phone with the new code to the front door.  New door codes should not be shared.  Multiple codes will be in use for different users and will be periodically changed or deleted.

~ This Month's Share the Plate Partner~

Beacon's community partner for February is The Literacy Center. The Center aims to increase the basic English language and literacy skills of adults, teens, and families in order to improve the quality of personal, economic and community life for all. Programs offer one-to-one tutoring, drop-in tutoring, classes at the center and in the community, and Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation (jail program). The Center serves 250-300 adults, teens, and families.
Beacon's Share the Plate presents undesignated Sunday morning offering money beyond $300 to the approved community partners.   Members are encouraged to nominate an organization and can pick up an application form in the CAC folder at the bottom of the office stairs.

Church Safety
Our congregations strive to be safe and welcoming places to all. There are steps that we can take to make our congregation safer while still creating a supportive space for our learning, growth, and challenge as well as actively working for the inclusion and safety of all people. See " A word about Fostering Safer Congregations" and " Fostering Safer Congregations" for more information.   Feel free to print, post and otherwise share the fliers.  This event is open to the public.  We encourage folks from other faith communities to join us.  If you have any questions please contact Sue Strobel ( [email protected] or 928-526-5156) or Terry White ( [email protected]  or 928-699-1138).

Day at the Legislature (DATL)
Whether you are an active Social Justice Ally, a Beacon member, friend or visitor, please think about whether you are interested in participating in UU Day at the Legislature (DATL) Mon., Feb. 18 (Presidents' Day)! Sponsored by UUJAZ (UU Justice Arizona) network, this day-long event at the capitol in Phoenix is part rally/songfest, part education (with the remarkable Anne Schneider's presentation on expected legislative activity), and part opportunity to meet with our LD6 legislators. When SJA meets Sunday, Feb. 10 we will finalize our carpool plans. For more information about UUJAZ and DATL  see this link, or google uujaz.org: DATL is
featured on the home page.
