From Bishop Barry

Epiphany 2019: Bishop Barry "chalking" the church doors of Epiphany, Vacaville.
|
Dear Friends in Christ:
Grace and peace to you.
I hope that Christmastide was a time of joy for you, and that this great Season of Epiphany will fill your life with abundant blessings.
I am grateful to our sister Suzanne Guthrie for the gift of "
At the Edge of the Enclosure," and the wisdom gathered and shared there.
In this moment of writing to you, at the threshold of the Season, I find her offering of these words of Karl Rahner have a deep resonance for me:
"A new year has begun. During this year, too, all the paths from east to west, from morning until evening, lead on and on as far as the eye can see, through the deserts of life, with all its changes. But these paths can be turned into the blessed pilgrimage to the absolute, the journey to God. Set out my heart, take up the journey! The star shines. You can't take much with you on the journey. And you will lose much on the way. Let it go. Gold of love, incense of yearning, myrrh of suffering -- these you certainly have with you. He shall accept them. And we shall find him." (Karl Rahner,
The Great Church Year)
May the Holy Spirit guide and sustain us all in this next stretch of our blessed pilgrimage.
Faithfully,

Heading to the Holy Land with Bishop Barry?
If you are traveling as a part of Bishop Barry's pilgrimage to the Holy Land this month, please help us share a little of this experience with the rest of the diocese!
Just one or two photos as the trip progresses would be helpful, and if you can include a caption or even a short reflection -- even better!
You can share the photos/posts to our Facebook timeline or email them to [email protected].

Join Trinity Cathedral in counting Sacramento's homeless
Trinity Cathedral parishioners will be volunteering for Sacramento County's 2019 Point-In-Time homeless count. The homeless count is essential to help our county apply for the appropriate level of federal homelessness funds. It's well organized and you will feel good about doing it.
Volunteering does not require any prior experience but you must be 18 years of age or older; have a strong interest in helping people who are experiencing homelessness; be able to walk a couple of miles and attend a required training class to learn to safely conduct accurate counts with teams within carefully pre-mapped territories. Information about the count goes out within the homeless community so that our counters are welcomed by people who are homeless.
The counts will occur Jan. 30-31 in the evening, and locations are to be determined. Volunteers go out in groups to their assigned area. You can
sign up here; please also email Shireen Miles to let her know know you are interested:

Strengthen your baptismal ministry and learn about your faith
Our diocese has established a partnership with the Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership which will allow lay and clergy members of our diocese to enroll in online courses at a discounted rate. Whether you are working on a new Lay Ministry license or are looking for a continuing education opportunity, CALL may have a course that is right for you.
One of our very own deacons, the Rev. Phina Borgeson, is teaching one of the classes available this winter. Here is the class description: Images of Diakonia is a seven week exploration for those discerning a call to the diaconate, deacons, and anyone who'd like to deepen their understanding of the church's diakonia to which we are all called in baptism. "Images" was designed by Deacon Maylanne Maybee who adapted elements of it for the recent deacons' retreat here at Bishop's Ranch. Since Maylanne is unable to teach it this year, Deacon Phina Borgeson is pinch hitting, and looking forward to helping students connect images from liturgy, their communities, and popular culture.
Visit the CDSP website
for more details, and, if you want to register, please email Betsey Monnot at
[email protected]
for information about receiving the discount. The winter term begins on Jan. 21.
