Update on MD DCDL

The Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL), which is hosting the Maryland Deaf Culture Digital Library, continue to work on the infrastructure of the library and have the following updates:
  • Interviews will soon be scheduled for the two staff positions to support the program.

  • Members of both the Maryland DCDL Advisory Board and Friends of the Library, DCDL provided input on the development of a logo and the selection of the final design. The design will be shared as soon as the work is complete.

  • The Maryland Digital E-Library Consortium expanded its e-book collection on deaf culture, deaf history and literature. They are now available for loan through Maryland's Digital E-Library Consortium. Library cardholders, who reside in any of the 23 Maryland counties, can browse the collection and borrow e-books through the Maryland DCDL website.

  • The DCDL team is working on designing space on upper level of the Germantown Library to house its collection of books, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers. The space will include new tables, chairs, carpet, signage and more.

  • Games, board books, toys, and posters for ASL literacy development have been ordered for the Discovery Rooms available at three Montgomery County Public Library branches.  The Discovery Rooms are designed for children from newborns to 8 years old and for their adult caregivers (over 18 years old) to encourage learning through play.

  • To prepare for new staff to begin their assignments, office supplies, electronic equipment for outreach, and other essentials have been ordered and received.

  • The project coordinator and MD DCDL Advisory Board members interacted with members of the community at the Mid-Atlantic Deaf Festival early June 2017, Telecommunications for the Deaf, Inc. Conference late July 2017, Deafopia held at Gallaudet University, on September 9, 2017, and Town Hall meeting hosted by the Maryland Governor's Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, on September 13, 2017.

  • The project coordinator has made connections with libraries and stakeholders outside MCPL.

  • MD DCDL is working with Deaf community stakeholders to programs for the deaf community to libraries. For updates on upcoming programs, click here.

  • The Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, MD (FOLMC) and stakeholders invite individuals to join the Friends of the Library, Maryland DCDL chapter. A minimum of 10 dues paying volunteer members is needed to officially form the FOL, MD DCDL chapter
