Make Sure Our Students are Connected

COVID-19 has created a situation where the start of the school year will look very different for students across the United States. Here in Highline, we will begin the year in full distance learning. Students will receive instruction and engage with their teachers online.

However, we have discovered that there are many students in Highline Public Schools who do not have access to quality Broadband internet access. For these students, engaging in school is difficult if not impossible. That's just not okay! While hot spots were provided to many families last spring, this did not provide the quality internet necessary to participate in school. All students should have access to their teacher and online classroom so that learning can continue.

Thanks to a partnership with Comcast, we are able to provide quality Broadband Internet to those families without it for the cost of $140 per year. Our best estimate is that we need to raise funds to get Broadband internet to 1,000 Highline families by September. We know our community is generous and can help us to do this. Please help provide Broadband Internet to a Highline Family (or two or more) through Highline Schools Foundation's Connect Highline Families campaign. Other COVID-19 Support to Students and Families

Since COVID-19 closed our school buildings in March, the Foundation has pivoted its work to ensure that families in the district have what they need to manage through this difficult time. This work has continued into the summer.

Food

With nearly 70% of our families living in poverty before the COVID-19 pandemic and many more losing jobs and income since March, we have started purchasing $50 grocery store gift cards and providing them to Highline families in need. Families are identified by social workers, counselors, family liaisons and other school employees.

Diapers

We have continued our partnership with World Vision and two area churches over the summer to provide boxes of food and essentials to Highline families in need. Each week, up to 150 families are being served. Just like with the grocery store gift cards, families are identified by social workers, counselors, family liaisons and other school employees.

According to Real Diaper Association, it costs the average family $62.50 per month per child to purchase disposable diapers. With budgets already stretched, this cost is not affordable for many families. Diapers have been identified as a significant need by families at the distribution sites. Therefore, we are seeking donations to provide diapers to families in need during this time.

Learning Packs of School Supplies

While school will be online this fall, there will still be plenty of tasks that will be done without using the computer. Therefore, Highline Schools Foundation is providing resource packs to students in need so that they have the pencils, pens, paper, crayons, scissors, markers, and other supplies that they need to complete school work.

Additionally, Highline Schools Foundation is providing school supplies to students to support their at-home learning. Our goal is to put together 5,000 learning packs for students filled with quality school supplies.
