From the Pastor

Thank  you for your love and support for the Englewood Church and it's members. The service Sunday was well attended, with all Open Door Churches represented. The stories told of how important the Englewood family of faith was to people and the church made a difference in the lives of many, showed how much of a legacy Englewood will leave in this community.

Most of the members have already found places of worship and service in other Open Door churches.

Trinity welcomes Linda Beerbower, Cloydine Bower, Rose Bradley, Shirley Cross, Bev and Tom Ellis, Carolyn Orr, Doris Russell and Cindy Yarnell.

General Conference is coming soon.  Please see the information below. If you have questions,  I will be available after worship on Sunday to talk with anyone interested about what this all means and why it makes a difference to us.  See you Sunday!

Pastor Sandy
2019 Special Session of the
General Conference
February 23 - 26, 2019

General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church, which usually meets every four years, but will be gathering for a special session on February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. The sole purpose of this special session will be to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward. The 32-member Commission was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The 2016 Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church.

In May of 2018, the Council of Bishops endorsed the One Church Plan as the best solution to a 50-year-old global debate. Eight hundred and sixty-four elected United Methodist delegates, about 42 percent from outside of the United States, will participate in the decision-making process in February.

The Mission Cabinet calls upon United Methodists in the Western Jurisdiction to continue in prayer for the upcoming work of this special session of the General Conference, even as they continue their most meaningful work of calling and nurturing disciples, and loving God and neighbor more fully.

This information was taken from a much longer United Methodist News Service article.  There is so much information available online, it is hard for many people to understand it or even get through it all.  Others may not understand the structure of the church and what that has to do with Trinity and how we may be impacted by decisions made at the General Conference. Pastor Sandy will be available after worship on Sunday to talk with anyone interested about what this all means.

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Trinity UMC
Open Door Churches January Board Meeting Notes
  • The Open Door Churches (ODC) Board meeting was held at Morningside UMC on Monday January 28th.
  • According to the 2016 Book of Discipline, the Open Door Churches of Salem Keizer is basically like the "Large Parish Co-Operative Ministry", which is described as a group of churches operating independently but under one board. We passed a motion to move forward to be identified as such. The board also agreed to form a Board of Trustees to oversee future property.
  • The Open Door Churches will add a Youth Director position (half Time) to the Open Door Staff. Jeff Lowery, currently the Youth Director hired by First UMC Salem (FUMC) and providing leadership for the Open Door Youth Group will be retained in this position, effective January 1, 2019. Open Door Churches will pay 1/3 third of the salary ($7,000 annually) and FUMC will pay the balance of the salary plus taxes and benefits. Funds from the Jason Lee Bedford Funds will be used to pay the ODC's share. These monies are overseen by the Cascadia District Extension Society.
  • The local churches donated about $1,800 to the Native American "Red Shawl Dance" project. There are still shawls to be made, if you would like to help, contact Pastor Wendy. A Blessing of the shawls will be at Morningside UMC on February 17th.
  • The Second Annual Riverfront Park outdoor worship service will be held on September 8th  2019.
  • Claremont School of Theology is moving forward with the plan to merge with Willamette University. The classes will start in the Fall.
  • Small groups identified some possible major goals for us as a Board and also some concerns. The top goals are: Support for the Las Naciones Church, the Young Adult Ministry, and a way to integrate the Hispanic & Native American kids into the youth program.
  • The next board meeting will be held at Trinity UMC on Monday March 4, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.
  • The Open Door Churches board members from Trinity are Pat Gillespie and Ann Jeffries.

by Pat Gillespie, Treasurer

In December the revenue did not catch up with expenses. Lower than budgeted expenses lessen the pain. We ended the year with the biggest loss in several years. In 2019 we need to be mindful this can happen again and attempt to keep up our giving.
