Updates from Mission Valley ROP's
Biomedical Science & Medical Interventions Program

Thank you for your continued support as an advisory member for Mission Valley ROP's Biomedical Sciences & Medical Interventions Program. Mrs. Farooq wants to stay connected with you and looks forward to upcoming collaborations in the near future.
Diabetes Diagnosing Lab

First year Principles of Biomedical Science/Human Body Systems students performed a diabetes diagnosing lab. Through this lab they learned how to screen for high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) and to detect and diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. The students were engaged and shared how the lab assignment gave them a lot of insight about diabetes and the effect it has on the human body.
Field Trips

In November, students from the Medical Interventions class had the opportunity to visit Triple Ring Technologies , a research and development firm in Newark. Students participated in a walking tour of their labs followed by a Q&A session with
Dr. Jeff Row of Device Farm who is working on finding a cure for nail fungal infections.

In addition, on December 1st, students from the Medical Interventions class presented at the PLTW info session at Cal State East Bay. Mrs. Farooq was so proud of her students for making a successful and outstanding presentation.
Glucose-Insulin Connection

Students in the Principles of Biomedical Sciences class worked very hard on making models depicting the Glucose-Insulin Connection and its connection to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Groups with the best models will get an opportunity to present to the monthly community forum for diabetes education at Washington Hospital in February.

Guest Speakers

Genetic counselor,  Larry Prinski, and Epidemiologist, Rita Shiau  from PAMF, were gracious enough to come speak to Medical Interventions students about their careers. The details they provided about their current job responsibilities and career pathways was both insightful and inspirational. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and really appreciated the information provided.

Melanie David, M.S Assistant Director, Bay Area Region Undergraduate Admissions from
University of California, Davis visited classes and informed the students on admissions requirements and programs available to select from. Students were very interested in the presentation and were able to have any questions answered.
Get involved by hosting a field trip or come in the classroom and be a guest speaker.
