Hello from ESF!

You are receiving this message because your state of residency is included in a New York State travel advisory that requires you to participate in a mandatory 14-day quarantine period before you are legally allowed to engage in public activities in New York State. Please see the full travel advisory here: https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory

To assist you in complying with this state mandate, ESF has made arrangements for you to quarantine for 14 days at Shapero Hall on the campus of Onondaga Community College (4894 Onondaga Road, Syracuse, NY 13215) before you move into Centennial Hall. During your quarantine period, a single room, meal delivery, WiFi, and laundry access will be provided to you at no additional charge.

We are providing this free accommodation to you as a courtesy. You are welcome to make alternative quarantine arrangements within New York State at your own personal expense. If you choose to make your own arrangements, please know we will require documentation of your 2-week stay in New York State before we can allow you to move into your room in Centennial Hall.

Due to the unique circumstances associated with the quarantine requirement, we must work closely with you to determine a suitable arrival plan. We will be hosting two Zoom information sessions for impacted students and families. The Zoom sessions are scheduled for 7:00 pm (EST) on August 2, 2020, and August 9, 2020. The Zoom login information is at the end of this message.

We hope to answer all of your questions during the Zoom session, but here is some key information to know for your advanced planning:

  • An ESF staff member will be in touch with you (via email or phone) to confirm your arrival date and time.
  • You will report directly to Shapero Hall with all of your belongings at your designated arrival time; do not report to Centennial Hall first.
  • A staff member will check you into Shapero Hall and orient you to the facility:
  • Shapero Hall is a secure residence hall that has been designated as a student quarantine facility exclusively for ESF and Onondaga Community College residential students.
  • You will have your own room and also the ability to interact with other students at Shapero Hall while following social distancing and mask-wearing policies.
  • Your meals will be delivered to you in Shapero Hall by the Onondaga Community College food service vendor. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated, but choices may be limited. You may wish to be prepared with snacks and/or bring funds to order food that can be delivered.
  • You will receive virus testing from a licensed medical practitioner before transitioning to Centennial Hall and the ESF campus.
  • An ESF staff member will check in with you daily while you reside at Shapero, and ESF University Police will have the ability to assist you in an emergency.
  • Once you are cleared to leave Shapero Hall, ESF will assist you in transporting your belongings to your room at Centennial Hall. Transportation cargo space will be limited, so we strongly urge you to bring only essential items with you when you arrive in Syracuse. We recommend bringing no more than 2 suitcases and a backpack. Additional items for your Centennial Hall residence can be shipped directly there or ordered for delivery once you arrive in CenTen.

We know this has been a challenging, and at times, very frustrating, summer for you, and understand this is not the way you anticipated arriving at ESF to start your semester. We’ve been frustrated by the challenges of changing guidelines and protocols, too. But one thing hasn’t changed: our genuine concern for you and your well-being.

We sincerely hope that the arrangements we have made for you at Shapero Hall will help you meet the mandatory quarantine requirements and still make a smooth transition to your new home in Centennial Hall.

Please plan to participate in one of the upcoming Zoom sessions. You do not need to participate in both. If you have questions or need additional information in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact us at studenthelp@esf.edu or 315-470-6660.

Sincerely,
Dean Lombard
Vice Provost and Dean for Student Affairs
